“I had full support of my family” – Deepika Daga, Founder of Dharohar

Recently we interviewed Deepika Daga, Founder of Dharohar, which is an online venture of very
creative crochet based products, which are hand-made products by women.  She is of the belief that
freedom in decision making truly empowers women. Read her full interview below:

1. What is the meaning of your name "Deepika”?
"Deepika" means light

2. How would you describe yourself in a sentence?
An emotional person, who needs a balance in life and loves creativity in any domain.

3. What were your childhood dreams?
No specific dream...but whatever dream at any point in life, I was always given freedom to chase
them by my parents.

4. Tell our readers about your education?
I am post graduate in Economics from Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University.

5. When and why did you start your company "Dharohar”?
I had a corporate experience of around 6.5 years in the domain of business analysis and market
research post I completed my masters in 2007.

Post my son was born in 2014, I quit my job and completely occupied myself in bringing him up. But
after he turned 3, and started going to school, I felt a need to do something that could help me to
gain self-confidence and on the top of it that can give me happiness within. And then, I started
exploring and finally decided to promote something I used to admire since the age when a girl
develops a taste in fashion.

I always used to love embroidery, thread work and such art but never paid attention to learn them despite being creative with love for art and craft. After exploring for more than 6 months, I realised lot of women, who are home-makers, love to do such creative work but they do not have access to platforms to showcase their art despite increased preference and demand of Indian handmade products in India as well as abroad. So I decided to promote the art of crochet and give a marketing platform to such women who pursue this art as a hobby and for additional earning and I started my online venture called 'Dharohar' in November 2018.

6. What are some of the most popular crochet products of Dharohar?
Most popular was our bedcover that was the introductory product of Dharohar and post those
different styles of stoles and bags. Now our popularity lies in providing customised product as
per customer's taste and needs in any category including home decor, apparel or accessories.

7. What are some of the key challenges which you face in your profession?
Being an online venture, the key challenge is to build a trust among buyers about the credibility
of the brand and the owner as well as the quality of the products posted on social Media.

8. How has been your experience with Glad2baWoman Business Community?
This was a milestone when I joined Glad2bwomen Business community last year. I must and would love
to mention that joining GBC brought back my confidence to speak in public as well as presenting
myself. I was a novice as an entrepreneur but in the presence of so many women entrepreneurs, the
morale to grow your business and explore opportunities multiplied. A special thanks to Mr Sundeep
Tibrewal who provided such an amazing platform for women entrepreneurs to grow and to guide them
unconditionally wherever required.

9. Who all have supported you in your business journey?
I had full support from my family to start this venture. A special thanks to my husband who always
supported my decision and always been there to help me wherever required. It may be a simple hand
delivery to client on the way to his office or packing the products for dispatch post his office.
And most importantly, a moral support which is of utmost important whenever anyone starts a new
journey in any aspect of life.

10. What does women empowerment mean to you?
Women Empowerment means independence... independence doesn't mean financial independence only but
also how independent a woman is in her decision making. To me, Women Empowerment should first come
within and cannot be begged in society. And that's what my parents taught me to be independent in
all aspects of your life.

11. When not working, how do you unwind?
When I am not working, I love spending time with my son in his playtime and to continue my
childhood passion of art and craft with him. Moreover, listening to my favourite songs and singing
along rejuvenates me and refreshes my mind.
