A. Angela Merkel : The Chancellor of Germany and Chairwoman of the Christian Democratic Union, she is the first female Chancellor of Germany. A physical chemist by professional background, she has been described as the world’s most powerful woman and as the “de facto leader of the European Union.” She entered the political domain in the wake of the Revolution of 1989 and through eventual developments; she has been through many ups and downs in her political career.
B. Indra Nooyi: An Indian-American business-executive, and the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at PepsiCo, she has directed the company’s global strategy for more than a decade and led its restructuring. According to Business Week, since she started off as the CFO in 2000, the Company’s annual revenues have risen by 72%, while net profit more than doubled. Fortune ranked her as the most powerful woman in business in 2009 and 2010. Forbes listed her as the 6th most powerful woman in 2010 and 4th in 2011.
C. Lady Gaga: An American singer and songwriter, she rose to stardom in the world of entertainment following the release of her debut album The Fame (2008). It was followed by a number of albums, such as The Fame Monster (2009), Born This Way (2011), which have received immense commercial and critical success. Her 18-month long Monster Ball Tour became one of the highest grossing tour concerts of all times. She holds the claim of being one of the best-selling music-artistes of all times, besides having 5 Grammy Awards and 13 Video Music Awards to her credit. She is regularly placed on lists composed by Forbes magazine, and was named one of the most influential people of the world according to Time magazine. In 2012, she was ranked fourth on Billboard’s list of top moneymakers of 2011, grossing more than 25$ million.
D. Chanda Kochhar : She is currently the Managing Director of ICICI Bank, India’s largest private bank, and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). She also heads the Corporate Centre of ICICI Bank. Under her leadership, ICICI Bank won the “Best Retail Bank in India” award for quite a few years. In 2009, she debuted at number 20 in the Forbes’ list of “World’s 100 Most Powerful Women”. She has also consistently featured in such lists published by Fortune, Business Today, Bloomberg Markets. In 2010, she was honoured with the Padma Bhushan Award for her services to banking sector. She was also awarded the ‘‘ABLF Woman of Power Award” in 2011 at the Asian Business Leadership Forum Awards.
E. Oprah Winfrey : An American media proprietor, talk show host, actress, producer and philanthropist, she is one of the best-known personalities in the media world. Listed fourteenth in Forbes’s List of World’s 100 Most Powerful Women, her best claim to fame is her self-titled, multi-award-winning talk-show, which has become the highest-rated programme of its kind in history. TIME Magazine wrote: “What she lacks in journalistic toughness, she makes up for in plainspoken curiosity, robust humor and, above all empathy.”
she has also made notable achievements in other media such as films, publishing and writing, and radio to reckon with.
