a. Pratibha Patil : Credited for being the first female President of India, she has shown what can be achieved by woman-power, no matter how mild, unassuming and “low-key” she is. Besides her political career, she has also contributed largely towards the welfare of the society in the form of – Vidya Bharati Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, an educational institute that has its chain of schools and colleges in Amravati, Jalgaon and Mumbai. She has also set up Shram Sadhana Trust, which runs hostels for working women in Mumbai, Pune and New Delhi, and an engineering college in Jalgaon. She is no less than an inspiration to the girls of India, today.
b. Ritu Kumar : A pioneer of the fashion industry, she has set a new benchmark of style with her unique designs of eveningwear, traditional Indian attire, casual wear, formal gowns etc. She has also styled the gowns of the three winning Miss India. She became the first woman to introduce the ‘boutique’ culture in India. Her beautiful blend of eastern and western styles, ancient designs and contemporary detailing and her thorough understanding of fabrics, colours, embroidery and aesthetics has made her the recipient of many awards at home and beyond. The brand ‘Ritu Kumar’ has been retailing in India and Europe since 1970’s.
c. Sheila Dixit : The fact that she has led the Indian National Congress party to a record three consecutive electoral victories in Delhi itself speaks volumes about her political prowess. She has served as the Chief Minister of Delhi since 1988. In 2009, she was awarded the ‘Politician of the Year’ by NDTV, not to mention she has other similar awards to her credit as well. The Secretary of the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust, she has spearheaded many a developments in Delhi, be it the metro or the recent Commonwealth Games.
d. Vandana Luthra : The founder and mentor of VLCC, India’s leading slimming, beauty and fitness brand, she is surely one of those few entrepreneurs who can be said to be the embodiments of their own enterprises. Her efforts have given a new edge to this industry, and has changed the lives of many women. With her quality standards, top-of-the-notch services, latest technology and applications, she has opened new horizons in the beauty market. No wonder she was appointed as a member by the Indian Government as a member of the special Task Force for Empowerment of Women. In 2009, she was listed amongst the 100 most powerful Indians by Indian Express.
e. Vidya Balan : She is the epitome of the gorgeous and incredibly talented young woman who has already earned accolades in the Hindi film industry and is arguably the finest actress we have today. Having silenced critics and wowed audiences with her back-to-back power-packed performances in Paa, Ishqiya, No One Killed Jessica, The Dirty Picture and Kahaani, she has changed the definition of the conventional heroine. Not only has she been sweeping away most of the awards, she is considered to be one of the few bankable ‘stars’ who is not only ‘show’ but also ‘substance’.
Indian women have thus scaled great heights and are aspiring to soar even higher! Their passion, grit and determination can propel them to charter their own paths and emerge victorious in their endeavors.
