A. Melinda Gates : An American businesswoman and philanthropist, she is the co-founder and co-Chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. She has also been the former unit manager of numerous Microsoft products such as Publisher Microsoft Bob, Encarta etc. She also features as one of the most powerful women in the Forbes list. She has received multiples honorary awards not only for her business acumen but also for her charitable acts towards the underprivileged.
B. Virginia Rometty : The President and CEO of IBM, this American business-woman was the first woman to head the company. She has made it to the Forbes’ magazine’s list of 100 most powerful women of 2012, as well as similar lists published by Fortune’s magazine and others. She has ably supported various efforts and initiatives of the company in diverse directions such as education, job growth etc. It is largely due to her contribution that IBM has thrived in countries such as India, Brazil and China.
C. Anne Sweeney : A face behind the tremendous success of Disney Media Networks, she is also the President of Disney-ABC Television Group. She has successfully managed to raise the revenues of the company steadily, overseeing the channel that reaches 600 million viewers in 169 countries. Currently, she has formed significant alliances and collaborations to further propagate new ideas. She has been reported saying that it is her irrepressible curiosity that gives rise to new jobs and new industries.
D. Jennifer Lopez : Talk of music, entertainment, glitz and glamour and one is sure to mention her! Over the years, she has delivered breakthrough performances in movies like Selena, Out of Sight, Anaconda etc., and has also simultaneously established for herself a successful career in music. Her videos are immensely popular for her Latin-Pop influenced dance moves. She is often viewed as a teen pop culture icon for the youth, with her brand and music appealing hugely to the younger generation. She has been the recipient of the World Music Award in 2010, apart from several other accolades.
E. Shakira : After being faced with initial failures, she finally made it big on the world of music and entertainment with her first English single, ‘Whenever, Wherever’. The rest as they say, is history. She has won five MTV Video Music Awards, 2 Grammy Awards, 8 Latin Grammy Awards, amongst others. Her “Waka Waka” that was chosen as the official song for the 2010 Fifa World Cup, is known to one and all, having garnered not only positive critical reviews but huge public attention as well! And who can forget her ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ that had been the bestselling song of the 2000s, and is still extremely popular.
These women have set a yardstick for generations of women to follow. Their footsteps will be indelible on the sands of time, and will continue to inspire many more to follow her dreams and conquer the world!
