Global Fund For Women

The Global Fund For Women is a foundation that is publicly supported, a non-profit grant-making organization that actively supports and advances women’s rights. They work at the local, regional and national levels to enable women and girls to attain their full potential and live a life that is emancipated from discrimination and violence. It was founded by three enterprising women who aspired to create different ways in which a global connection of people and ideas could be established : Anne Firth Murray, Frances Kissling and Laura Lederer.
Its network encompasses more than 4,200 women’s rights organizations in 172 countries since 1987. They collectively fight for women’s rights and embark on movements aimed at social justice. More than 20, 000 individuals and charitable institutions from around 40 countries, including the US, donate generously to GFW. Its Board comprises of 17 women hailing from different countries and belonging to diverse fields, such as scholars, activists, entrepreneurs, medical and financial professionals. They lend their invaluable strategic insight as well as prudent financial management to the organization. The professional staffs are divided into 4 teams - Finance and Administration, Development, Communications and Programs.
GFW provides grants to women and women’s rights activists in order to ensure global women health, and to safeguard their right to sexual and reproductive choices. It works with adolescent girls, rural women, indigenous women, sex workers, HIV positive women and others. Their vision is based on the belief that in an empowered society, women should be enabled to exert her rights over her own body, in every way. It is also heavily involved in the war against gender violence including intimidation, clothing codes, public sexual humiliation, trafficking etc. Another major challenge that this foundation takes up is the fight against women’s poverty. GFW envisions a world where every woman must have access to food, economic security, clean environment, and other basic resources. It also supports grantees that work to preserve biodiversity, conserve energy, water, etc. and ensure women’s participation in global negotiations.
GFW also believes in equal participation and leadership of women in public life that will go a long way in improving their lives, families and the societies in a larger scale. It supports women so that their voices are heard and they get a due place in decision-making communities, including disabled women, widows, women from minority communities, or lower socio-economic status. Women need equal political equality which can be attained by ensuring their say in the electoral process.
Also, GFW works tirelessly towards decreasing the gender disparity when it comes to education. It has supported various initiatives directed towards women’s education and has also invested in women’s skill-building training programmes as well as knowledge-building activities. Their programmes are also made accessible to those women that are usually excluded from the education system, such as widows, school drop-outs, teenage mothers, sex workers, orphans etc.
GFW boasts of several success stories and milestones that it has achieved in diverse areas in its journey so far, and in its quest for even higher goals, it is sure to make many more accomplishments. It is due to such foundations that many women can look forward to a healthier, happier tomorrow.
