Layer up! Hide that flab, fashionably
There is an interesting line to sum up the damage junk food can have on your waistline – “A moment on the lips and forever on the hips”! This is unfortunately all too true where women are concerned – many of us have watched in consternation as our male counterparts imbibe large quantities of junk without an inch being added to their frame while when we do the same the results are disastrous. Women are predisposed to fat and for those of us who are naturally pear shaped – slim upper body, heavier thighs and hips – it can be a nightmare if we put on weight. This is because the weight goes directly to those areas and it seems like it is truly stuck there forever.
A strategy must be devised of course and this involves not only the usual rigmarole of diet and exercise but your fat days must not make you look like a slob. Many women tend to wear loose balloon tops which hide the belly fat or the side fat overflowing the waistbands of their jeans – or they wear shapeless garments. This makes them look untidy and doesn’t do anything for their self confidence.
“The dilemma I face, is that clothes fit me fine except for at my waist and stomach because all the extra weight is concentrated there. I am forced to wear loose tops which hide it!” says an agonised Madhurima Mukhopadhyay who is on a mission to lose the belly flab accumulated over the past few months. Women face the problem of their clothes not fitting them properly at their waist and stomach area and tend to wear dull and boring clothes which are two sizes too big to accommodate the flab. However, there is a new trend that is the rage now, perhaps devised by women who faced the same problem!
Layering is the art of wearing different layers of clothing – jackets, shrugs and stoles – to hide the belly. In order to not look like a yeti all bundled up in a large number of clothes, make sure the layers are thin – nowadays there are super thin jackets and shrugs designed for this purpose. Shrugs are the new in thing – it hides your flab and makes you look stylish at the same time.
All you ladies who battle with belly fat – wear a formfitting tee and then layer it up. If your tee is showing off your belly fat and muffin tops, wear a stylish long shrug over it. You will not feel hot because the materials of shrugs are thin cotton usually. Light silk, light wool, knit cotton and soft leather are hot picks. These will work well in winter as well if you layer them with heavier woollen clothes.
Start with a light layer underneath- wear a thin tee. Don’t worry about the bulges from the extra clothing. Add a draped shrug, cardigan or jacket. Twist a light scarf around your neck and you are good to go! Make sure that the shrug or jacket is a dark coloured on and it will be even more effective in hiding the outlines of flab. Buy the longer jackets that reach your waist for good measure.
Not only with jeans and tees, think tunics and leggings or dresses – wear a pair of fitted leggings and a long top or tunic over it – and a jacket or shrug over that. This helps to create a slimmer silhouette – choose your layers carefully and make sure the fabric is soft and thin else you will look bulky. Invest in slim fit trousers and pants and add a pair of heels to your outfit. This will accentuate the leaner bits of your body – your legs- and add poise.
With this basic concept you can tweak it to match your style, with colours and outfits that suit you. Remember, the mantra is not to look frumpy, even if you are fat. Don’t hide behind those A-line tops or balloon shirts; diet, exercise and layer up till you lose that flab!
