"We need a more women friendly world" - Interview of Founder of Glad2baWoman
The Glad2bawoman editorial team recently interviewed, Sundeep Tibrewal, Founder of the online media initiative - Glad2baWoman. He is also the author of the book, Love Hurts Love Heals.
1. You have a Masters in Engineering Degree, an MBA degree and now this online media venture for women! It all sounds incredible. Can you tell the readers briefly about your background and how did Glad2baWoman happen?
Yes it has been a pretty interesting and long journey. I got my B.E. degree from RVCE, Bangalore and then went to Phoenix, USA for Masters in Engineering at Arizona State University. I also worked in Phoenix in a mobile software development company and after four and a half years in Phoenix, I returned to India. I did a web startup for students and did my MBA from ISB, Hyderabad. I joined 9.9 Media in Delhi as Chief Product Manager for all their digital initiatives but after one and half years I returned to Kolkata when my daughter was born and I wanted to stay closer to my family, who were based in Kolkata. After a few months I started a digital marketing firm, NeoBVM.
Very early this year in 2012, I faced a challenging situation in life and it forced me to re-assess my goals and priorities in life. One of the outcomes of this assessment was a media project for women empowerment and women health. Professor Kavil Ramchandran from ISB, Hyderabad and Vijayalakshmi Rao, who is deeply committed to the cause of women’s education, empowerment and entrepreneurship agreed to be advisors for the Glad2baWoman initiative. I am grateful to them for their moral support to start this venture.
2. However, Glad2baWoman also deals in other categories like relationships and fashion and lifestyle… How were these categories added to the project?
Relationships are the very foundation of society, which holds it together. If the relationship between children and parents or husband and wife or brother and sister or between friends is not good then individuals and families will suffer and the same negative energy will reflect in society as well, since individuals and families make up society. So we definitely wanted to cover “Relationships” as well in Glad2baWoman.
If the inner beauty and strength of women can be complemented with physical beauty as well, then why not! Almost every woman whether one admits or not, wants to look beautiful so we thought of including the “Fashion” category as well. I would like to honestly acknowledge that the business demand also in a way prompted us to take this decision since there are many advertisers in fashion and lifestyle category. At the end of the day we have to pay salary to our employees, and meet other costs as an organization. We are a commercial venture but with a social heart. If we generate revenue only then we can sustain the growth of the Glad2baWoman community and make a better impact to improve the status of women in society.
3. What are the main goals of Glad2baWoman?
Our venture, Glad2baWoman, has the following main objectives:
a. To increase awareness about women rights and women empowerment amongst the community members
b. To showcase women achievers in different professions including women entrepreneurs and to inspire members of our community, especially those who are still studying or are in the early phase of their career
c. To showcase grass root level NGOs who are doing excellent work for women development and child care and help them mobilize more fund to scale their social work
d. To be a self sustaining organization
4. Glad2baWoman is such a “feel good” name for women. How did you arrive at this name?
Ideally I would have liked to start a venture called “Glad2baHuman”! However, we felt that we might fall into the trap of becoming just another media company and try and cover each and everything on Earth. We wanted to focus on women centric issues and the name “Glad2baWoman” had lot of positive energy in it. Another option was “Proud2baWoman” but it had a tinge of arrogance to it so we finally opted for “Glad2baWoman”. Gladly, most of the community members really like the name since they are truly glad to be a woman!
5. Does Glad2baWoman harbour anti-men sentiments?
Women are suppressed not only by few men but also often by other women. Also, Glad2baWoman has nothing against men. It is not a men bashing media vehicle. We all know that there are many good men out there. We do not want to showcase anything to pull men down but want to promote everything that will bring women up and help them claim a rightful equal status in society.
6. You are an author too! Tell the readers about your book – “Love Hurts Love Heals”
It is a true story about Neha, my wife, myself, our daughter and both our families. I wrote the book this year itself after a major hiccup in life and the book is something very close to my heart. I think the readers will benefit a lot from it. It will give them a different perspective about life and help them prioritize things in a much better manner. It will encourage the readers to pause, take a deep breath and reflect about the mysteries of love and life!
7. Again, how did you determine the name of this book?
In fact the Glad2baWoman community members helped me finalize the name of this book. I had a few other alternatives in mind as well, like – “My Adorable Darlings”, “One Hug Please”, “Beyond Love” but the majority of Glad2baWoman community members, friends and family liked the option of “Love Hurts Love Heals”. So my sincere thanks to everyone for contributing towards the title of the book.
However, would like to clarify that the "love hurts" portion of the title is actually a misnomer. The fact is that "love never hurts", it is always the absence of love that hurts !
8. Any message you would like to convey for the Glad2baWoman community members?
I dream of a more woman friendly world for my daughter. I am sure all parents would harbour such a dream and not just for the sake of our daughters but also for our sisters, our mothers and for each and every woman. To achieve such a woman friendly society, we need to express what is acceptable and what is not. We hope that the Glad2baWoman community members will voice their opinions and participate in our different initiatives. There are doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, teachers, principals, media professionals, police officers and many other women achievers in our community who have managed homes as well as built their career. All of them can be a huge inspiration and role models for so many young women. Reach out to us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Our editorial team would love to hear your stories and share it with the entire community.
Lastly, I seek your blessings for Glad2baWoman team to give us courage and strength to make a difference!
