Play the Second Innings of Your Life to the Hilt!
Retirement is a crucial point of every individual’s life that involves several financial, social and emotional changes. The new situation is accepted and welcomed differently by people, and thus, it might bring along happy leisure on one hand or it may even come with its share of restlessness and depression. Economic considerations are also a major factor that determines how one’s life is going to be post-retirement. For women, in more cases than not, the situation is even more delicate and difficult since they may not have someone to rely on for support, be it in whatever terms. It is indeed disheartening if senior women have to go through the hassles of leading a lonely, aimless life with no monetary resource to fall back on. Thus, it is rather advisable for them to look for working options, if their health and other circumstances permit them, so as to keep their idle hours occupied, provide them a healthy, amiable environment with cordial people for company as well as boost their self-respect with the gift of financial independence. And this holds true for retired women all across the globe.
According to the U.S. Department of Labour, the number of employed Americans ranging between the ages of 65 and 90 has grown considerably in recent years. In fact, 6.4% Americans aged 75 or older which comprises of more than one million seniors were still working in 2006. Just 10 years earlier, the percentage was just 4.7%. Thus, retirees are working in different kind of places to get that extra income and in the process, end up feeling content and confident.
Many retired women are jumping into the consultation business, as they realize that their hard-earned skills and knowledge that they have gathered over the years through experience is immensely valuable and highly marketable in the current times. Those that were experts in their concerned fields in the working years, can sell their expertise to other companies after they retire picking and choosing the projects that they want to handle, thus being their own boss! Those women who are gifted with an entrepreneurial prowess and computer-savvy skills can make use of the endless opportunities that the Internet brings along. Be it website designing, or programming, or supplementing software etc., there are innumerable options to earn. They also might spare a thought to government positions, since many offices and agencies do not follow age discrimination. On the contrary, there are some that actively seek older workers, and such available positions can be utilised by retired women who want to explore a new lease of life.
Though in India the perspective and prospective are yet to flourish, but retired women in other parts of the world, mainly in developed countries, can choose from a wide variety of working options such as starting a catering business, being a floral assistant in the local florist’s shop, being a tour guide, or a retail worker that includes jobs of a cashier, stock room associate, floor supervisor, or retail management positions etc. Retirees are drawn to these jobs as these generally allow a flexible schedule, ample social interaction and a decent pay. Also, certain companies allow retirees to stay in the same job, with fewer working hours, limited workload and reduced salary. This might also be a good option for women who want to continue the work that they have held for years, ensuring a steady income for themselves, and also getting time to engage in hobbies, pastimes, relaxation and other activities.
In U.S. and other countries there are many post-retirement work options for women, from childcare work to customer service positions, and it is high time that India also comes up with such avenues to let these women gain ground for themselves.
