The peplum top
Another new trend that is making waves now is the peplum top. It’s fun, fashionable and what’s more, it hides the large hips and love handles that all women fret about. The word peplum originates from the Greek word for tunic and is basically an overskirt which is attached to a top, skirt or jacket by design. A peplum doesn’t make you look thin, all it does is it flatters your curves and hides any extras that you may want hidden. It is actually meant for fuller women because it celebrates and highlights the waist-hip curve which should be generous if you want to opt for this style. There are, after all, some outfits that skinny, thin people won’t look good in – and peplum is one of them. Look at the heavy figured but chic Kim Kardashian for inspiration!
Wear this outfit to work, for brunch and for a casual evening out with a date. You can even pair it with shorts or a mini for a fun night out outfit.
This is a favourite with the ladies who have thinner upper bodies and a thin waist, flaring out into wide hips, rear and thighs. Of course a badly fitted/cut peplum can make your legs look too thin and you might end up looking like you are wearing the valances that people attach to their curtains or around the bed – but choose wisely and there is more of a chance of you looking like a fashionista and not a fashion failure. This is because if you wear the style correctly, your figure can look like an hour glass.
Pair a peplum top with a pair of flared or fitted trousers- according to your height. If you are one for wild and bright colours, go for contrasting shades such as blue and orange or pink and neon green. If you aren’t, then be more conservative with pastels and dark shades like indigo or violet – or even dark red. This ensemble can be worn to your workplace – if you tone it down to dark shades, that is.
Wear a fitted white peplum with dark and distressed denims which end at your ankle and strap on pointy toed heels for a casual afternoon look. Carry a small, chic sling bag to complete the outfit. This is an effortless look, which is different from the usual and classic white tee-shirt and denims combo.
Pencil skirts also look great, teamed with a peplum top – wear a fitted pencil skirt and a contrast or same coloured peplum with it to work or wear a staid skirt with a crazy printed top for a fun contrast. This style also looks good with a fitted miniskirt if you are thinking of going out with a good looking man! You can also wear it with shorts for a casual Sunday look.
And if you are thinking of going formal then opt for a peplum dress or long skirt. Wear the peplum on the skirt, instead of on the top – the peplum frill should be attached to your skirt. Add a fitted sleeveless blouse to the ensemble and be prepared for all the compliments that roll in!
You can also check out peplum style jackets which can look chic over a fitted spaghetti top and jeans. All in all, this is a trend to watch out for because it is definitely here to stay!
