The tales our skin lives to tell: Angelina Jolie’s tattoos!
“Wear your heart on your skin in this life” wrote Sylvia Plath. And that is exactly what Angelina Jolie went and did. From the time she was a teenager, Jolie was fiercely individualistic and she loved expressing it all the time. She got numerous tattoos at numerous points of her life, and each one of them had been a celebration of who she was, is, and wishes to evolve into. They are a celebration of the events in her life, and they are an extension of her own personality. She has had fourteen tattoos, out of which, some have been removed, and some remain, while others have been covered up with newer tattoos. On her upper back, on the left side, she sports a Buddhist prayer which looks much like the claw marks of a big cat. This prayer, in the Khmer language, is a prayer for protection and prosperity as well as for beauty, and since Khmer is a language so widely used in Cambodia, she got the tattoo in celebration of her first adopted son, Maddox, who is from Cambodia. This is one of the most prominent tattoos on her back. She also has a large tiger etched on her lower back, which was done with a manual needle instead of a tattoo machine. The tattoo is that of a Bengal tiger. “Know your rights” is another tattoo on Jolie’s back. This one, which she got done to commemorate her favourite band, The Clash, who had made this song, resides between her shoulder blades. On her left arm, she sports coordinates, which are geographical in nature. These numbers denote the places where she adopted, or gave birth to each of her children. More appropriately, they mark the birth places of each of her six children, and she also got another line to commemorate Brad Pitt’s birthplace. On her left wrist, Angelina Jolie sports the letter “H”. This tattoo is probably one of her oldest tattoos, which was once a symbol for both ex-boyfriend Timothy Hutton, and older brother James Haven, but now the letter stands only for her brother, whom she is very close to. One her right arm, Jolie has something written in the Arabic script, which basically translates into Determination. Under her left arm, she had the number 13 tattooed in roman numeric. However, she later added other number to the digits to turn it into the thirteenth of May, 1940. This date is significant because of a famous speech which Winston Churchill gave on that very day. She has another tattoo on her left arm which is a quote from Tennessee Williams. The lines goes to say “A prayer for the wild at heart, kept in cages”. She could identify with the quote, since she too, was a wild-child, and must have felt constricted at various points in her life. On her waist, she has a tattoo done, which shows a cross, next to which is the Latin phrase “Quod me nutrit me destruit”, which translates into “what nourishes me, destroys me”. These are just the tattoos which Angeline Jolie has at present. She had many more tattoos which were in celebration of people who are no longer in her life, or which do not have adequate context in her present situations. Her skin, in short, is tattooed with the story of her life, her mission, her happiness and her ambition.
