10 overlooked causes for break-outs
Imagine the following scenario: you are using pricey acne control or oil control skin care products, you are taking good care of your skin, it is not that special time of the month yet suddenly your skin has started to break out like crazy and you have no idea what’s causing it.
Many of us have faced this unexplained breakout episodes and get frustrated. They start to apply medicated products which make the condition even worse!
Today let’s discuss about some facts, 10 to be exact, which are the silent culprits for breakout.
1.Stress: Stress not only causes high blood pressure and other serious physical troubles, it also can cause your skin to react negatively. When you are in stress, the immune system of your body releases inflammatory chemicals called “Neuropeptides” and also causes hormonal changes which results in the breakout. Our body can’t distinguish between good stress [wedding or planning for some positive event] and bad stress [exam or board meeting, physical & mental distress]. Irony is, when we stress out about our breakouts, it causes even more breakouts.
Solution: Just relax! Try yoga or take a brisk walk when you are feeling the pressure.
2.Diet: Sometimes fatty and dairy products or food which increase our blood sugar [soda, sugary snacks, junk food] can trigger acne. Sometimes salt can also contribute to it. Also, when we make a big change in our diet, it triggers acne.
Solution: Add more vegetable, fruit and water to your diet and avoid yo-yo dieting.
3.Medicines: Some drugs like corticosteroids, androgens or lithium can cause acne. Even birth control pills can also result in breakout for some women. As every woman’s estrogen and progesterone balance is unique and changes throughout the cycle, these pills affect different woman in different ways. For some, these diminish the breakouts and for some, the condition becomes worse!
Solution: Talk to your doctor about this problem so that you can be prescribed with another formula.
4.Hair: Hair style and hair products can cause acne. Hair products can clog the pores causing inflammation which results in acne along the hairline. Also when we cut our hair in bangs it causes friction of the hair and the styling products used on the bangs can easily accumulate on forehead. Another surprising cause is conditioner. When we wash our hair in the shower, the conditioner from our hair rolls over to our body and causes acne on our back.
Solution: Try keeping your hair away from your face. When rinsing out conditioner, wash your hair separately with a hand shower.
5.Stubble: This is one of the most overlooked causes of breakout. I know many women love stubble on their guys, BUT it can cause breakout in both the ladies’ and the gents’ faces. How, you ask? Well for men, it’s due to dirt, skin care product and dead skin build up. But for the ladies, beside these causes, stubble burn is another cause for breakout. Sometimes aftershave products can also irritate skin which results in acne.
Solution: Ask him to “clean up” and use a fragrance-free aftershave product.
6.Pillow cases: Dirt, oil and skin products build up in your pillow cover and transfer to your skin every time you take a nap.
Solution: Wash your pillow cover at least twice weekly.
7.Hair removal: Did you know waxing, tweezing, shaving and depilatories can make skin tissue swell, sending acne-causing bacteria and skin cells deeper into pores and causing breakouts?
If you didn’t know it already, you should keep it in mind.
Solution: The “rash” that occurs after hair removal can be reduced by using 1% hydrocortisone cream before and after the process.
To decrease bacteria on the skin, clean the areas thoroughly before hair removal and use products labeled “Noncomedogenic,” which means they won’t clog your pores.
8.Cell Phones: When was the last time you took an anti-bacterial wipe (or any kind of wipe) and cleaned your cell phone? You don’t remember? That’s too bad, because throughout the day cell phones come in contact with different surfaces. When you are receiving your phone, all the dirt and bacteria accumulating on your cell phone comes in contact with facial skin. That is why; sometimes one specific side of your cheek seems to have more breakouts than the other side.
Solution: Clean the surface of your cell phone with an anti-bacterial wipe every day.
9.Excessive washing: You like to wash & exfoliate your face? Me too! But sometimes over washing and over exfoliation causes excessive oil production of skin and cause breakout.
Solution: Limit washing your face twice daily and finish off with a moisturizer. Also avoid exfoliating more than twice per week.
10.Nails & Fingers: No, our hands or nails won’t cause acne, but the stuff (or to be precise, dirt & germs) in those lead to breakout.
Solution: Keep your hands clean and don’t pick up your face!
So now you know about the 10 insignificant sources of acne and how to avoid it! Follow these steps for 1 month and I hope your acne problems will be diminished markedly.
