Julia Roberts - A Pretty Woman indeed!
Who doesn’t know this American actress? Ask anyone and he/she will go gaga over the movies she has starred in, be it Pretty Woman, Erin Brockovich, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Notting Hill and many others. Her rise to the fame and glory in Hollywood was undoubtedly after delivering her first major grosser Pretty Woman, which was a romantic comedy. In terms of box-office records, she has been one of the most successful actresses of all times as well as one of the highest-paid ones in the world! According to the Hollywood Reporter’s annual “power list” of top-earning female stars in 2005-2006, she was the topper.
Her first appearance on the big screen was with Satisfaction (1988), following which, she was heaped with critical success galore with her performance in the independent film Mystic Pizza in the same year. In 1989, she played the role of a young bride with diabetes in Steel Magnolias, for which she received her first Academy Award nomination as well as her first Golden Globe award. Pretty Woman (1990), where she co-starred with Richard Gere, remains her best-known film till date, with which she won the hearts of movie-lovers all across the world.
It also earned her a second Oscar nomination along with another Golden Globe win. Then came the thriller Sleeping With The Enemy, where she essayed the role of a battered wife who escapes her abusive spouse; this was also commercially successful. She played widely diverse roles in movies such as Hook, Dying Young, The Player, Michael Collins, Mary Reilly, Sesame Street etc. She also had a brief stint with the world of television, with her appearance in the season 2 of Friends, and as a guest star on the Law and Order television series episode “Empire”. She has been nominated for Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. In 1999, she featured alongside Susan Sarandon in the critically panned flick Stepmom.
Her portrayal of Erin Brockovich earned her the 2001 Academy Award for Best Actress. She teamed up with the movie’s director Steven Soderbergh for four more films – Ocean’s Eleven, Full Frontal, Mona Lisa Smile and Ocean’s Twelve. In her career phase spanning from 2006 till date, she did films like The Ant Bully, Charlotte’s Web, Charlie Wilson’s War, Fireflies in the Garden, Three Days of Rain, Valentine Day, Eat Pray Love, etc., many of which won her several renowned award nominations, and she also managed to bag some. The People’s Magazine has named her as one of the “50 Most Beautiful People in the World” not once or twice, but eleven times! Men’s Health magazine proclaimed her as one of the “100 Hottest Women of All Time” in 2011. She was ranked 11 in the list of the most powerful women in the United States, published by Ladies Home Journal.
Though her personal life has been rather controversial, mostly owing to her reported romantic liaisons with many actors; however, she has many charitable deeds to her credit, whereby she had devoted her time and resources to UNICEF and some other charitable organizations. In 2000, she narrated Silent Angels, a documentary about Rett syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder. It was designed to help raise public awareness about the disease. In 2006, Earth Biofuels announced her as a spokesperson for the company and also a member of its newly framed Advisory Board promoting the use of renewable fuels.
With her charming smile and acting prowess, she has remained a heartthrob of her audiences for years, her movies continue to be loved by the young and old alike and she is still one of the most popular and sought-after actresses in Hollywood.
