Bring on the drama, bring on the ruffles!
Why be subtle when you can be bold and dramatic? And it just gets better when you get to be bold while being incredibly chic. Small, subtle ruffles are a thing of the past. With fashion getting more daring and expressive with every single day, big ruffles rule the runways all over the world. And the best part is, there is nothing subtle about them. They are bold, edgy, glamorous, and they will make you feel like a diva in an instant.
While technically speaking, from a designer’s point of view, a ruffle and a flounce are two distinct styles, they are fast melting into one big hot-pot. Everybody remotely fashion conscious is sporting the ruffle or the flounce, and they are doing so in a big way! The ruffles are getting more extravagant, and the flounces are growing bigger by the day. Recently, the first lady of America, Michelle Obama was seen sporting a dress with a big ruffle in the front.
The best part about ruffles is, they have evolved from being strictly girly to suiting even androgynous needs. Although one gets to see them most often on gowns, they are growing on jackets, shirts, blouses, dresses and even on pants and skirts. Ruffles and flounces are becoming more cutting edge, and if you think that pink and shades of red and white are the only colours suited to ruffles, then you are mistaken! Ruffles are looking incredibly cutting-edge and formal on black, grey, nude, and just about any other colour.
There are a couple of tricks, however, to wear them right. Nobody wants to be seen looking like a pom-pom. Ruffles are very dramatic and very eye-catching, so instead of crowding it with other equally demanding clothes, one should keep it understated when wearing anything with big ruffles on them. If you want to wear a ruffled skirt, then make sure you wear an understated, subtle blouse on it. A black ruffled skirt is a great buy, because the big ruffles on the skirt will go well with various kinds of tops. From a crisp white shirt for work, to a red satin one for a night out, or a peach blouse for an evening out, there is no end to the kind of improvisations that one can make with a ruffled skirt.
If you’re planning on buying a little black dress for yourself, do not go the boring way this year. Opt for one with the high drama of big ruffles and flounces. Depending on your personal style, you may get yourself one with a lot of small ruffles grouped together, or you may end up getting the more suave, sharp flounces for a sharper, less girly effect. But ruffles will definitely make heads turn, and your little black dress is bound to stand out from amongst a sea of other, more conventional ones. Keep the jewellery to a minimum, however, and make sure your make-up does not compete for attention with your dress!
Ruffles go very well on blouses and tops as well. With formal blouses, opt for big ruffles without making the blouse look very untidy. Make sure you wear a pencil skirt with the blouse, though, and make sure the skirt or the pants do not flare out in any way, because then the effect of the ruffles will be ruined.
The trick to wearing them right is to let them get the attention they deserve, and wearing big ruffles will definitely ensure that you get the attention you deserve! Go ahead and ruffle feathers with your big, bold, dramatic ruffles which will make sure that nobody mistakes you for being meek and boring!
