Dress to be hipster chic!
The hippie era might have come and gone by us, but the hipsters are all over town. And while hipsters are almost always parodied, they are a very relevant social phenomenon of the newer generations, and they look like they’re here to stay. Despite a lot of satire on them in various forms of pop culture, hipsters do have some very pertinent aspects to their culture. They are oriented towards reading and a cultivation of that habit in general, they are geared towards a lot of fun and interesting music, and they do believe in being aware of relevant socio-political details of the world in general.
Hipsters also have a very quirky sense of style. One can spot a hipster from a mile away, just by the way he/she looks. There are some very distinct qualities which go into hipster-chic dressing up, and keeping some basic rules in mind will help one look like a very trendy hipster is a very short span of time.
The first and most basic rule is that hipsters shun the mainstream, and this applies to clothes as well. Hipster-friendly clothing never involves going to the big, branded chain-stores. They choose to shop from small shops which sell very select items. You will never catch a hipster wearing a pair of jeans from one of the big brands. They will, instead, opt for the ones from the vintage stores across town.
Jeans brings us to the second golden rule about hipster-chic dressing up. They always opt for skinny jeans and trousers. Barely ever does one get to see a hipster sporting big, baggy cargo pants. Their pants are always skinny and tight. So the first big step to hipster dressing would be to nab a pair of skinny jeans which will go with many different kinds on tops and shirts.
Any self-respecting hipster girl is bound to have her closet filled with stockings of various kinds. They tend to go well with muted colours and they tend to off-set the duller shades of dresses and skirts. Patterns and even bright neon colours tend to be very popular. Choose a couple of colours which suit your skin-tone well.
Maxi skirts are another must-have. Maxi skirts with floral patterns are sure winners, because hipster-dressing includes a weakness for floral-print clothing. However, try not to pick floral prints with a lot of bright colours. Opt, instead, for the ones which look vintage and involve warmer shades rather than the ones which pop out.
The most basic step towards hipster-chic dressing is to stock up a good number of vintage tees. They’re a must have for every hipster-girl, and they are comfortable and off-beat all the same time. While most people around you will be wearing similar-looking clothes owing to shopping from more-or-less similar stores, your clothes will stand out as being very different.
Accessorizing with hipster chic clothes is tricky, but is easy to follow once you get the hang of it. The most parodied bit about being a hipster is wearing big glasses with square frames, but one need not follow a certain fashion sensibility blindly. Don’t wear glasses if you have no vision defects. It looks like you’re trying too hard, and one should never mix-up fashion with being impractical and desperate. Opt for a couple of good scarves instead. The woven ones go very well with hipster clothing. A few hats, including beanies and fedoras look great, and mismatched jewellery is never a problem so much as it is a medium of expression when it comes to hipster clothing. One should always remember, however, to not overdo it, because hipster-chic also relies on minimalism.
Follow these basic steps, and if you feel like you have the soul of a hipster within, express it well by dressing up like a true-blue hipster girl.
