Angelina Jolie’s standout movies
Angelina Jolie has wowed us from the very first time she blazed across the silver screen. A definite presence, she has played numerous and varied roles, ranging from a distraught mother to a video game character with élan and panache and has emoted differently as and when the role demanded it. A versatile and extremely hardworking woman, she is well known not only for her towering presence in Hollywood but for her charity work. No one can allege that Angelina’s work is half hearted – when she is acting, she gives it her all, when she is not, she is touring the world, working for the underprivileged – especially for the plight of the refugees. She is also mother to six children and a devoted and loving partner to Brad Pitt, one of Hollywood’s most sought after men. Let’s have a look at some of her best work on the big screen: Gia (1998): Angelina took our breath away as the edgy, unhappy and self destructive model, Gia Maria Carangi. Gia Carangi was arguably, the first supermodel the world has seen and this short TV film was made, based on her tragic life story. Angelina portrayed the insecurities of the beautiful model very well and the emoted the terrible mood swings, the emotional upheavals, the turn to drugs etc. which finally led Carangi to a tragic end from AIDS, with effortless élan. Being a fierce and dedicated ‘method actor’ Jolie often came across as difficult between shoots because she insisted on staying in character – which was hard for the people around to get used to. Post Gia, Jolie felt as though she had been drained of all she had to offer and divorced her then husband, Jonny Lee Miller and moved to New York and joined New York University to study writing and film making. However, she soon resumed her acting career and plodded along in acceptable roles till she acted in; Girl, Interrupted (1999): She portrayed the character of Lisa Rowe, a mentally challenged girl. This film is touted as Jolie’s breakthrough film into Hollywood and though it was supposed to be her co-star Winona Ryder’s come back movie, it shot Jolie to her rightful place at the top of the Hollywood food chain. The Lara Croft Series: Angelina wowed her fans with her role of Lara Croft, an adaptation of the Tomb Raider video game series. She starred in two films – Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. The role required Jolie to learn how to speak in an English accent and it is reported that she learnt martial arts for the movie – a move which earned her applause for the physical fitness she showed. Mr and Mrs Smith ( 2005): It was apparently during the screening of this film that Brad Pitt fell for the leggy actress and soon after they were an item. Jolie played a gun toting assassin who moonlights as a regular housewife till it is revealed that BOTH she and her regular-guy husband (Pitt) are assassins who have been ordered to kill each other. Jolie acted in a number of other movies such as Alexander, Changeling and Salt; The Bone Collector, Original Sin and A Mighty Heart – the latter, noted for her portrayal of the grieving wife of the slain journalist Daniel Pearl. Jolie plays the pregnant Mariane Pearl with heart wrenching conviction in her quest to find out what happened to her husband, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl after he went to Karachi to meet and Islamic cleric, never to return. She has also voiced for many characters in well loved animations including the role of Master Tigress in Kung Fu Panda and in Shark Tale and Beowulf. She continues to be a role model for those who want to enter the film industry and will continue to live in the hearts of her fans through her movie roles and her social work.
