A journey into the world of music with Shreya Ghoshal

Her mellifluous voice has enchanted music lovers across the country. Her debut with the song Bairi Piya in the movie ‘Devdas’ topped all musical chartbusters, and was declared an instant hit. She became one of the biggest discoveries of Bollywood at that point of time. No prizes for guessing – we are talking about Shreya Ghoshal, whose beautiful singing has won her national as well as international fame. It is a rare honour to have a day named after you and this honour is enjoyed by this 29 year old youth icon. In 2010, during the US summer tour , Governor Ted Strickland of the State of Ohio declared June 26 as Shreya Ghoshal Day. The singer is perhaps the only one amongst her contemporaries to enjoy this honour.
Born in Bahrampur, West Bengal, Shreya grew up in Rawatbhata, a small town near Kota Rajasthan. Sarmishtha Ghoshal, Shreya’s mother, discovered her love for music early on and started training her at the age of four. She is trained in Hindustani classical music by Rakesh Sharma. She soon arrived at the city of dreams, Mumbai, where along with professional commitments, she completed her graduation from SIES, Mumbai
She witnessed her destiny unfold before her when she took part in SA Re Ga Ma Pa, a popular music competition and talent show, which was looking for talented singers at that point in time. After she had mailed a recording of her songs in a cassette, she was called for an audition and eventually won the title. Shreya’s mentors in the competition - musical duo Kalyanji-Anandji, immediately took her under their wings and trained her for a year-and-half.
The first time Bhansali heard Shreya, he knew this was the voice for Paro – the female lead character in Devdas. According to the director, it was the innocence that attracted him. The freshness appealed to him and this was how she got her first assignment in Bollywood. Shreya recalls her recording of the song as dream like. She sang with her eyes closed without a break, and it was recorded in one go!
Not only Hindi---she has sung in Bengali which is also her mother tongue, Malayalam, Oriya, Assamese, Kannada, Telugu, Punjabi, Tamil and also Nepali. Bendhechhi Beena was Shreya’s first album which was released in January 1, 1998, with 14 tracks.
