Wear ties with panache
While they are generally known for being wardrobe staples for men who need to wear formal clothes to the office, ties have been re-invented and completely stripped of that archaic gender barrier. From watching teen pop star Avril Lavigne who made tartan and silk ties the ideal fashion statement for young girls, to Bollywood starlet Rakhi Sawant who channelled her inner “secretary” look through a formal shirt paired with a mini skirt and tie; this accessory is a fashion must-have, and comes in a wide range of styles to choose from.
Hollywood actresses such as Jessica Alba, Winona Ryder, and Nickelodeon’s Victoria Justice, have all worn the skinny tie with panache. Essentially a thinner version of a regular tie, the skinny tie is an excellent option for those who want the avant garde corporate look. The look involves pairing dark, skinny jeans with a plain colored full-sleeve shirt and accessorizing the outfit with a skinny tie. The tie should end at navel level and could have embellishments and patterns on it. High stiletto heels are recommended to complete the look. This outfit can be worn to the office, perhaps with a formal jacket as an addition; for those not comfortable with high heels, loafers are an acceptable replacement.
A similar formal look can also be adopted by replacing the skinny jeans with a knee-length A line skirt which works well for all body types, and by pairing them with high heels or kitten heels. Either way the idea is to keep the overall outfit simple so that the tie becomes the main focus of the look.
For an edgier, less formal look, a tartan skirt with a white singlet, thick black tie and Doc Marten boots will make you feel like a young punk rock musician! Ties have always been popular accessories with music bands, from The Beatles to Green Day and Avril Lavigne, so the young generation tends to modify and wear ties accordingly. The younger generation seems to prefer following Lavigne, who is known for pairing solid colors with black and pink striped ties and matching armbands. Those into heavy rock can look at thick ties with metal chains, buttons and rivets, which are usually tied loosely and paired with quintessential “band t-shirts”.
Ties are not just restricted to the formal office crowd and the edgy music-loving crowd, as proved by runway shows where Ralph Lauren, Miu Miu [from the house of Prada] and Chanel have paired ties and evening gowns together and have even designed Swarovski-encrusted ties as high fashion accessories. Actress Frieda Pinto was recently seen sporting a black silk tie with her white Chanel evening dress at a Met Ball, another sign of the trend catching up with the fashionable crowd.
Overall it takes a lot of self-confidence to carry off a tie, so the idea is to choose one which will suit you and accentuate your look. The general rule is to maintain a balance between solid colors and prints, so if the outfit has solid colors, a printed tie will work, whereas an outfit with prints and details will be offset appropriately with a solid hued tie. Also available are necklaces which are designed exactly like ties and do not require “tying” as they have clasps. Enjoy this gender-bending trend and jazz up your look!
