Overalls are in fashion this season
Overalls were initially considered work wear, and were therefore worn by farm hands and industrial workers, much like the now iconic jeans and t-shirt, which are must-have fashion staples. True to their versatile nature and high degree of comfort, overalls are now part of the modern fashion ensemble, and come loaded with bright splashes of color, interesting patterns and the classic flannel or plaid shirts which are part of the traditional look. From the classic denim look, to flirty florals, to futuristic neons and even leather, the overhauled overall is here to stay and suits most body types and fashion tastes. Here are some traditional and not-so-traditional ways of wearing this classic style staple.
Corduroy and denim are the most common fabrics used in overalls. Regular denim or corduroy overalls are traditionally worn with a t-shirt underneath, but this look can easily be upgraded for a more fashion forward appearance. Replacing the t shirt with a feminine peasant blouse or a half-sleeve top with frills at the neck will automatically give you that chic girly appearance. Accessorizing with the inclusion of high platform heels and cinching the waist with a belt will complete this modern take on traditional overall wear.
One of the things which could go wrong with the traditional denim or corduroy look is when you choose a pair that is too baggy; therefore be sure to choose a fitted pair which flatters the shape of your legs without completely covering them. Much of the modern overall fashion channels a casual look which is also slimming for the figure, so loose fits are definitely not recommended.
Overalls need not be traditionally long; they are also available as “shortalls”, or overalls which are the same length as the average pair of shorts. Worn with t-shirts or even tube tops for a summer look, it is fashionable to wear wedge heels and accessorize with a sling bag in order to channel a runway look. Celebrities such as Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez channel similar looks by pairing their shortalls with high heels, crop tops and statement jewellery.
Interesting versions of the traditional overall have come into fashion in a big way thanks to designers such as Phillip Lim and Isabel Marant, and flagship chain stores such as Zara, who have brought forward a number of embellished and patterned versions. With celebrities such as Rihanna, who have millions of fans who emulate their fashion styles, there is no limit to the number of fashionable looks which can be created.
There are a few rules to be followed in order for one to exude that feminine appeal while sporting a pair of overalls. A fitted pair of overalls is definitely preferred over comfort fits as it will highlight the natural shape of the body instead of hiding it. Those on the voluptuous side of the body chart need not worry about appearing larger, as the body-hugging aspect is restricted to the thigh area; the midriff is always covered. For a sporty look, one can wear racerback tops, while a more relaxed look can be achieved with cut-off t-shirts. The traditional pairing of overalls with a plaid shirt is also in, and can easily be accessorized with a pair of thick-soled work boots.
Overall, a pair of overalls is highly recommended for those who want to keep up with the current trend, and might double up as workwear for the modern home maker or professional, true to their original roots!
