Priyanka Chopra kicks off her international singing career
Priyanka Chopra has successfully added another feather to her considerably large cap, by becoming the first Bollywood actress to launch her own music career with an international music label, Interscope Records. Her music manager, Troy Carter, is the CEO of Atom Factory, which also manages the career of Lady Gaga; therefore it can safely be assumed that her career is in good hands. With the recent release of her song “Exotic”, featuring American rapper Pitbull, Chopra is well on her way to proving herself as being one of the most multi-faceted women in the entertainment industry. From singing her first recorded song, “Ullathai Killadhe” in 2002 for the Tamil film “Thamizhan”, to collaborating with international music star Will.i.Am for the first single of her debut album, “In my City”, Chopra’s business smarts, have ensured a smooth and swift rise to the top of the music charts.
Chopra attributes her singing talent to her late father, whom she says was a gifted singer and lover of music. From the age of 13, during her schooling days in the USA, Chopra was part of competitions and events, and was even included in the National Opus Honour Choir; and was the only Indian to have been selected for the same. While initially hesitant to pursue a career as a music artist, she now feels confident of the foothold she has earned in the Bollywood film industry as an actress of repute, and is now dividing her time between acting engagements and performances at music events.
Two songs from her album have been released between September 2012 to July 2013; the first song, titled “In my city”, was released during a TV sport for the NFL Network’s Thursday Night Football a mere 12 hours after it debuted on Indian music channels. Inspired by her nomadic childhood which involved constantly moving to, and living in different parts of the world, the song sold 130,000 copies within its first week, and trended at number one on social networking sites. In the US however, the song failed to make a splash within its initial weeks but is now climbing the music charts, partly due to the success and recent release of the second song from the album.
The second song released on July 9th 2013, and is called “Exotic”. The video features Chopra in becoming beachwear and a series of outfit changes, flanked by popular rapper Pitbull as she sings sometimes confusing lyrics about feeling exotic and wanting to travel to different parts of the world. Unlike the first song which was sung only in English, Exotic features a smattering of Hindi lines, interspersed with Pitbull’s signature one-liners which have made him world famous in India. While the song itself is not unique, and the video, typical of what one would expect from Jennifer Lopez and other pop music artists, the fact remains that Priyanka looks gorgeous throughout.
While most critics and music aficionados have not been particularly kind to Chopra’s album, mostly due to the apparent overuse of the “auto tune” function which gives an electronic, unnatural twist to the voice, the general party populous, along with her legions of fans, are enjoying her new avatar and are demanding more. She has won a number of awards, including “Best International Debut” at the Indian edition of the People’s Choice Awards. She has also been nominated for three awards; “best female artist”, “best song”, and “best video” [for “In my City”] at the World Music Awards. She has also won the Trailblazer award from the South Asian Media, Marketing and Entertainment Association in recognition of her being the first Bollywood actor to bag a major record deal. She has also been featured in an EDM [electronic dance music] song produced by the DJ and producer duo, “The Chainsmokers”.
The critics may or may not be correct about her actual singing abilities, but the fact remains that Priyanka Chopra is here to make her mark as a singer, albeit with various auto tuned songs and clever collaborations with chart-topping international artists who will automatically ensure album sales, exposure, and opportunities to perform at international arenas. She has made it clear that music is her soul, while acting remains her passion, and it is clear that her business smarts and influence will guide her right to the top of the international music charts, where she aspires to be.
