Michelle Obama jokes about her White House Prison life

US First Lady, Michelle Obama, is known for her witty sense of humor, an enviable wardrobe which has landed her on the cover of Vogue magazine twice, and for her ability to relate to the general public without the stiffness and tight-lipped attitude which one would generally expect her to have. Her commitment towards going back to the basics and living healthy is reflected not only via her campaign against obesity called “Let’s Move!” but also in her widely-publicized private life where it is noted that she does in fact, practice what she preaches. Public and media voyeurism knows no boundaries, but rather than shy away from them and invite sensationalism and speculation, Obama has graciously allowed everybody in to see what the life of a First Lady truly entails; from the trials and tribulations, to her schedule, and also her balancing act between being “Malia and Sasha’s mom”, “Barack’s wife”, the public “First Lady”, and last but not least, intelligent and beautiful Michelle Robinson, an empowered woman who speaks her mind. Obama’s White House life is filled with opulence, grandeur, and scores of employees. From maintenance workers to a professional chef, to bodyguards and ever present government officials who ensure that both home and the Oval Office are run with efficiency, one can imagine a home which is constantly bustling with activity. Michelle Obama herself makes it a point to start her day by preparing her two daughters for their day at school, while subsequently scheduling her own working day which begins from 10:30am. She maintains first and foremost that her priorities begin with looking after her family, and so ensures that her schedule reflects the same; all meals including breakfast, are a strictly family-only affair. She drops in at the Oval Office to check on husband Barack, especially if he is facing a challenging day at the office, and moves on to her own activities. Being the founder of an anti-obesity campaign, “Lets Move!” Michelle is constantly on the move, speaking at schools and dancing with excited young students, while overseeing healthy eating and activity plans which endeavor to alter the unhealthy “junk food” eating patterns and sedentary lifestyles of young students. She is also one of the most loved First Ladies, due to her willingness to be open and honest with the media about her life, and its many aspects. A regular on popular talk shows and news shows, she shares her views on current affairs, and brings forth her own ideas and suggestions, which could be implemented with ease and efficiency. She also works closely with war veterans, and ensures that the men and women who defend the United States, are entitled to respect, rights and housing, since a number of them are otherwise rendered impoverished and homeless. Never one to shy away from being an intelligent, fashion-forward woman, Obama also features regularly on award shows and women’s empowerment oriented shows such as “The View”, where she speaks about current issues with an openness which is greatly appreciated by viewers. Michelle Obama’s White House life therefore, is a never ending circle of activity; action-packed without a break, whether she is being a mom to her children, a pillar of support to her husband, or a spokesperson for social development. While it is true that she has plenty of help, it is also easy to empathize with her as someone who never really has the chance to relax and “let loose”. The constant media attention, public scrutiny, the ever-present officials and bodyguards would make it quite difficult for this multi-tasking woman to just take a break and be herself. One can therefore, see where she is coming from with regard to her “prison” joke; it is a glamorous prison, from which an escape is not possible.
