So what exactly is a wrap dress? Well, it does exactly that – it wraps around the frame, hugging every curve and skating over the unflattering bits effectively. In fact, it is a style that was popular way back in the 1970s, when fashion designer Diane Von Furstenberg created one out of jersey material which was long, till the knees and had long sleeves. She says that the comfort fit which looked stylish was inspired by her divorce from her husband which led her to seek comfort yet look good in what she wore. They were extremely popular during that time and was a symbol of women’s lib because of their daring open front design which is then pulled together and fastened by stays.
Their popularity was renewed during the 1990s and they are a roaring trend in modern times with celebs all over the world flaunting them with élan. Essentially, the dress is one which has no front closure and is worn by wrapping one end of the dress around the other, knotting it together with tassels and stays or buttons. Usually with a V shaped neckline, this dress is a very flattering cut and style and therefore popular with many women. One can buy ready-made wrap dresses as well, which can be slipped over the head and come with the fastens and ties already in place.
Celebs who regularly flaunt their figures in wrap dresses include Paris Hilton, Mischa Barton of the OC fame, Eva Mendes and Amy Adams, and in Bollywood, the curvy Katrina Kaif, the pretty Twinkle Khanna and new mom Lara Dutta. The latter especially chose to hide her post pregnancy flab in a pretty pink wrap dress at an event and looked gloriously stylish.
Wrap dresses come in all sorts of materials though ideally, one should wear them in fabrics which “fall” well and flatter the figure. Usually, these dresses have a lovely ruche in the middle and there is no need for any other accessory like a belt or a brooch, though you can of course think about a small pin at the lapel, a long chain or a cocktail ring to jazz it up further. Knit fabrics are the best for wrap dresses and the style will create a waist for you, even if you do not have one.
