Choosing the right LBD for your curvy figure
For those lucky women who are blessed with natural curves and proportionate bodies, choosing the right dress can be an arduous and time-consuming task. Fashion designers in general seem to prefer manufacturing LBD’s for the more slender section of women, thus leaving the curvier ones feeling a bit left out, or worse, struggling to adapt to styles which simply do not suit them.
However, with the recent entrance of fashion forward celebrities such as singer Adele, Glee actress Amber Riley, and previously size zero entertainer, Christina Aguilera, all of whom flaunt their plus size fashion choices with confidence, the market has now opened up to the need for fashionable clothes for larger women. LBD’s are now available in bigger sizes, but it is still important to keep a few facts in mind while selecting the “perfect” dress.
For those who are unsure as to whether they fit into the “plus size” category, plus size refers to those whose dress size is above a US standard size 12. Size numbers vary per country, but it is safe to state that most plus size women wear larger clothes, i.e. L, XL, XXL, and are generously proportioned. Not every plus sized woman is fat, however, although a majority of them do tend to have large busts and wide hips. The little black dress or LBD is perfect for differently proportioned plus size women, as the color black has a slimming effect on their bodies. Going for a plain black dress, or one with black sequins is a common choice for those looking to exude classy appeal. Accessorizing can either be over the top or simple, once again depending on the neckline and length of the dress.
For the plus sized woman who would like to show off her curves, a v-neck or corset style LBD will serve the purpose well; V necks reveal a little or a lot of the bust area, depending on whether the look is classy or glamorous, while adding length to the neck and giving an illusion of height. For women who want to accentuate their bust and hips while also reducing tummy bumps, control or compression lingerie will smooth the area; corsets, in fact, were once worn as inner wear due to their ability to bring out the bust line and reduce inches from the waist area. It is ideal to pair this style of LBD’s with stiletto heels and a clutch; it is also advisable to wear a pair of sheer black stockings for an elegant look, which will not reveal too much skin.
A trick, which will help pear-shaped women to accentuate their best assets while reducing hip and bulk in the bottom half area, is to wear off shoulder or sleeveless dresses which are cinched at the waist. This not only smoothens bumpy areas, but also adds length to the body. Choosing an LBD, which ends a palm size above the knee, will also give the illusion of height without adding bulk. This effectively removes the myth about larger women having to wear long dresses!
Keeping accessories simple or outlandish is a matter of choice, and while it is always recommended to avoid chokers and tight armbands since they are better suited for longer silhouettes, one always has options. Long chains, longer earrings which touch the base of the shoulders, and single statement hand and neckpieces are recommended since they will add to the overall “slimming” effect which most larger women are looking to achieve. However, confidence is key in all regards, and if you feel that you can carry off a particular accessory with your choice of slimming LBD, then that is what counts! Enjoy exploring the various options available and be sure to select an LBD, which flatters your figure and brings out the best in you.
