Oprah’s party dresses are trendsetters
Known for her deep v-neck dresses in bright hues, Oprah Winfrey’s party dress looks have come full circle over the past 25 years with a variety of hits and misses along the way. From her stunning ruby red gown, which she wore to the 2005 Legends Ball, to the gorgeous gold-hues bead embellished gown, which she wore to the Academy Awards in the same year, is testimony to her penchant for embracing her considerable curves. Not one to shy away from bold colors, prints and unusual fabrics, Winfrey’s personal style and the outfits she has worn for her talk show, have become both, talking points as well as hot sellers on the fashion market. The soft and feminine petal pink gown she wore to the 2007 CFDA Awards became one of Ralph Lauren’s best-selling gowns, while her bohemian-glam Gucci ensemble which she wore to the Vanity Fair Oscar party also attained the same popularity. More recently, Winfrey made waves with her custom ruffled navy silk gown by Oscar De La Renta, which she wore while co-chairing the Met Ball. One of Oprah’s most significant contributions towards fashion is the fact that one does not have to be “sample size” in order to enjoy fashion. Her consistent promotion of party outfits and other clothing which were suitable and flattering for curvier women, led to a fashion revolution of sorts. With her personal endorsements of well-known mainstream designers and also lesser known names in the business, Winfrey unwittingly made room for the plus size options in designer stores and is still credited for bridging the gap between fashion and plus size women. This is one of the reasons why a majority of the outfits she has worn have become hot-sellers, in a manner, which is rivaled only by First Lady Michelle Obama, whose fashion choices are also closely imitated by fans. Despite her not being as visible in the mainstream media as she once was, Oprah is still capable of making an impact; she recently stepped out for the premiere of Lee Daniels’ film, “The Butler”, in which she plays a major acting role. She wore a shocking pink, figure-hugging dress which accentuated her curves, and paired it with a pair of large hooped earrings and pewter colored peep toe pump shoes. Needless to say, the ensemble was widely reported by the fashion media, and will soon be one of the most widely discussed outfits among the fashion community. Oprah’s influence in any sphere, be it social development or fashion, is undeniable. She is well respected as a plain speaking fashion icon who is a hero of sorts for women with curves. Her fashion recommendations, budget friendly or not, have a reputation for flying off the shelves the moment they are featured or worn by her. Her own choice of party clothing almost always involves the quintessential v-neck dress in a bold hue with comfortable pump heels and some statement jewellery. She is not known for her fondness for elaborate hair and makeup, and like the true fashionista that she is, prefers to let her party dresses take center stage.
