Michelle Obama has impeccable taste when it comes to party dresses
US First Lady Michelle Obama has been a world-renowned fashion icon for some time now, and has already been featured twice on the cover of the prestigious “Vogue” fashion magazine, a first for a lady in her position. Obama is known for her ability to effortlessly mix and match different styles and carrying them off with panache to a variety of high profile events where one would usually expect her to be dressed in her designer best. Obama however, is unapologetic about her oscillating and fun fashion choices; she is as regularly spotted in a budget outfit from J C Penny as she is while wearing a custom creation by one of her favorite fashion designers, Jason Wu. It should come as no surprise therefore, that her party dresses are, like the rest of her wardrobe, a mix of branded, store bought, and high-fashion limited edition pieces.
Obama recently attended the “let freedom ring” ceremony which commemorated the 50th march on Washington for jobs on freedom, wearing a black and red floral dress designed by one of her favorite designers, Tracy Reese. While one would expect the dress to retail for thousands of dollars, given that it was selected by the First Lady herself, it is currently available on various websites for only $500. Needless to say, there are a number of non-designer copycat versions available, all of which will help the wearer channel Mrs.Obama’s very covetable style.
Jason Wu appears to be one of Obama’s go-to designers for the times when she is searching for a one of a kind party dress which will suit her. From his awe-inspiring one-shoulder creation which she wore to the Inaugural Ball, to the classy but chic sheath dresses which she pairs with her famous strings of pearls, Wu certainly knows the kind of style which Obama is looking for. Wu was one of the lucky designers whose creations Obama wore while posing for both Vogue magazine covers.
Obama enjoys making a statement with party dresses which bring out her natural strengths, which in her case include her height, toned arms, and athletic body. She also makes it a point to add strong statement pieces of jewellery to her outfit, which add some color to her dresses. While she is known for repeating certain favorite dresses by designer Michael Kors, she has also been spotted wearing party creations by other designers such as Alexander McQueen, Prabal Gurung, and Rachel Roy.
True to her own style however, Obama has also worn dresses from various high-street brands, pairing them with equally inexpensive accessories, thus causing a chain reaction in the form of purchases of the dress, along with shoes and accessories by those who follow her fashion sense. Much to the joy of Obama’s fans, they can actually afford to purchase and sport the same look that she does, without burning a hole in their pockets. To say that her fashion choices and ability to wear budget dresses has earned her many fans would be an understatement!
Budget or high fashion notwithstanding, Michelle Obama’s party dresses are showstoppers and trendsetters in their own right, and she has rightfully earned her reputation as being one of the most fashionable first ladies in history thus far.
