Michelle Obama’s Lets Move! campaign is facilitating a cultural shift in American schools

It has been 4 productive years since First Lady Michelle Obama conceptualized and launched her campaign, “Lets Move!” as part of a concerted effort at tackling the growing problem of childhood obesity in the United States. Currently impacting 3700 schools who have signed up on letsmoveschools.org in order to be included among those educational institutes which pledge to include more physical activity for students, the impact of the campaign has affected innumerable young Americans and their families in a positive manner. From encouraging physical exercise through catchy music videos, to facilitating healthy eating by tying up with professional chefs who teach healthy and delicious cooking methods, Obama’s hands-on approach to the campaign is what has led to it enjoying the level of success that it has been enjoying so far. Obama recently roped in veteran retired NBA legend, Shaquille O’Neal, who accompanied her on a trip to the Orr Elementary School in Southeast D.C. where she congratulated them for their dedicated and consistent approach towards encouraging healthy meals in cafeterias, physical activities for students, and for facilitating physical education classes for students. O’Neal announced that he would be providing 500 schools with physical activity grants of up to $1000, and shared his own secrets behind eating and living a healthy lifestyle. He is one of many celebrities and role models who have been roped in by Obama to support and endorse the Lets Move campaign. The objective of the Lets Move campaign extends beyond simply tackling unhealthy eating habits such as fast food; it promotes more permanent lifestyle changes such as food steamers instead of fryers which will automatically reduce consumption of fried food. Growing and nurturing vegetable gardens is an activity which Obama encourages by inviting young students to visit the White House garden, where fresh vegetables are grown for her own family. Old and abandoned properties are being turned into bike-friendly zones and playgrounds, thereby providing children with access to more playing grounds. no credit loan lenders While the replacement of much-loved snacks with healthier alternatives has allegedly had mixed results, Obama has full faith in her arsenal of celebrity-backed methods which will, at some level, impact her target audience. Female singing superstar Beyonce, for example, has shot a music video for the campaign, and has sung the title track. A number of actors and hip hop music stars have contributed towards her upcoming music album on healthy eating. It is noteworthy that Obama has consistently thought her campaign through, keeping current pop culture trends in mind, so as to appeal to her target audience. Obama has stated that her objective is to facilitate a cultural shift which will replace unhealthy living habits with more healthy and wholesome options, which will, in the long run, not only reduce obesity, but also improve the general health of the American public, which has been in decline off-late. This cultural shift has begun in schools, and is expected to enter other institutes where it may be more challenging to convince working professionals to give up their fat-laden, salty and processed fast food for health food. Obama however, is confident of the potential of her campaign.
