Vidya Balan's weird wardrobe story in Ghanchakkar!
Ghanchakkar, which released in June 2013, was noticed by people more for the eccentric wardrobe that Vidya Balan flaunted in this movie, than the movie itself. And why not? Since the very first time when the promos went on air, she raised eyebrows with the loud and bright apparel of hers. Hardly have we seen the female protagonist of a movie showing off her most unusual, even bizarre, style statement. The makers of the film claimed, such a wardrobe was a need of the character, to manifest her weird, idiosyncratic self. Neetu Bhatia, a Punjabi housewife, played by Balan in the movie, has a uniquely quirky fashion sense. This has gone so viral, having attracted the attention of industry insiders as well as audiences, that Vidya even flaunted such clothes in the promotional events, perhaps in an attempt to attract more curiosity. Designer Subarna Ray Chaudhuri was assigned the task of creating such a weird and colourful look for her. Interestingly, she had also designed Vidya’s wardrobe for her debut movie Parineeta. As Chaudhuri says, debutante director Rajkumar Gupta had given her a brief that Vidya portrays the role of a middle class housewife, who leads a dull life with a lazy husband around. She is a fashion freak, but the tailors end up distorting her clothes in such ways that she is seen wearing poorer replicas of the current trends. Neetu has been sketched as a character who is a crazy fashion follower, even buying old fashion magazines in bulk from the paper mart! Vidya’s outfits in the movie are a psychedelic blend of everything that one finds at local street shops. She is a shopaholic, but high-end luxury brands are beyond her means. Instead, she takes inspiration from popular actresses and models, and asks her tailors to stick her clothes resembling the style of celebrities. However, her outfits in the movie cannot be termed as outright tacky, though they are of course, far from being classy. They are just colourful and fun. Chaudhuri was cautioned beforehand by the director to not be swayed by apprehensions as to how the audience would react to Vidya’s look in the movie. She says that it was a risky experiment, as designers are usually accustomed to come up with “stylish” looks, in the general sense of the term. But mixing up a wild variety of prints and colours, yet managing to make the actress look good is a difficult task. But as she says, and as we all have seen, Vidya did pull off the look with a vivacious confidence. She sports a variety of clothes and accessories in the film, including kiddish earrings, hair-clips, smiley t-shirts, dresses in psychedelic prints, and shoes with cartoon designs. Several elements have been put together in such a fashion that it looks random, yet intriguing. Be it a Bollywood inspired tunic top or t-shirt shaped earrings, what Neetu follows can be termed as cocktail fashion. She is a trend-follower, but she also incorporates her personal interpretation in whatever she wears. Brushing aside all rumours that Vidya’s look in the movie was inspired by television actress Dolly Bindra, Chaudhuri said that she created a peculiar and unique kitschy style statement for Vidya. Here’s one actress who dares to try new things, not only in terms of her performances, but in an all-encompassing way! We’re waiting to see more of you soon, Vidya!
