Neon Party dresses are vibrant and retro!
Neon shades reached the peak of their popularity in the 60’s during the peace and love themed “Flower Power” era. Bright dots and bold splashes of neon shades brought every outfit and accessory to life, and also made its way to the big screen courtesy hippie icons and music legends whose preference for everything bright and beautiful ensured that the shade hung on in closets for many decades to come. Bollywood too, was bitten hard by the neon apparel bug during the 80’s and 90’s, and it is hard to forget screen legends such as Karishma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon and Shilpa Shetty wearing those bright yellow skirts and dresses in 90’s films as they danced to those popular film songs!
Today neon has brightened our party dress wardrobes with their hard to miss shades and patterns. From old school balloon dresses to more modern zig zag ribbons of color on a plain dress, there is a wide array of styles and colors from which to choose a suitable dress. Choosing the right color and shade of neon is as important as choosing the right cut and style of your party dress. Fashion gurus are in favor of selecting neon versions of colors, which already look good on you; for example, if pink tones flatter your skin tone, go for a fluorescent pink colored dress.
The style and cut of dress, which you choose is equally important, and it is generally advised to go in for classic shapes such as shift, sheath, and A-line styles so as not to overplay the color of the dress. In context with neon party dresses, it is the colors, which will “make”, or highlight your dress, so ensure that the dress itself has minimal embellishments.
Interestingly, black is a color, which is not advised while wearing a neon party dress! This is unusual, considering how one is used to reading about black being a saving grace in context with it’s slimming and flattering effect. Neon party dresses however, are not in favor of adding any black elements to either the dress or accompanying accessories, as this would mute the vibrant and bright appeal of the entire look. Instead of black, it is recommended to consider wearing neutral or nude, skin tone flattering shades when it comes to heels and accessories.
In context with accessorizing, it is important to remember the “neon party dress rule”; the color is the highlight of your outfit. Choose complementary accessories wisely, white and neutral shades are recommended, and the same color rule applies to tights, leggings, and stockings, which may be worn with shorter dresses. There are so many looks which one can channel by using the right accessories, hair, and makeup, from a 60’s hippie look with a large bouffant hairstyle and neon mini dress, to a 90’s Bollywood heroine with a bright yellow neon dress and even brighter neon pink lipstick to match! The options are endless.
