From Mary Kom to modern day mujras, Priyanka Chopra excels at essaying them all
It should come as no surprise that Priyanka Chopra, noted actress, singer and lyricist, is multi-talented. Much like her fictional characters from the film, “Whats your Rashee” where she played 12 different characters, Chopra’s real and reel life appear to be on the same track. If yesterday’s news applauded her for her efforts at portraying Olympic boxer Mary Kom, then today’s news will be all about her seductive look for the upcoming Bollywood film, “Ram-leela” where she performs what she describes as being a “modern day mujra”. Acting is not as easy as one would like to imagine. Judging this profession on the basis of its high glamour quotient will not do, one only needs to scratch the surface in order to reveal the sheer hard work and dedication that goes into preparing for a film. For Chopra as an actress, there is no “fixed” type of character for her to play, she has played them all. From a negative role in the film “Aitraaz”, to a deglamourized role in “Kaminey”, to multiple challenging roles in “Saat Khoon Maaf”, to the upcoming Mary Kom biopic for which she has undergone a remarkable physical transformation, versatility is a trait which features high on her list of attributes. Most noteworthy is her performance in the Anurag Basu film, “Barfi”, where her sensitive portrayal of an autistic person won her numerous awards and accolades. Fans of the actress are in for a visual treat this year as they get to see Chopra in three completely different avatars; she will play a tough and determined sportswoman for the Mary Kom biopic, a journalist in love with a superhero for Krrish 3, and last but not least, will be seen in that much talked-about item number for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film, “Ram-Leela”. One would imagine that after all those long days spent in and out of make up vans, traveling worldwide for shoots and promotional events, not to mention more time in front of the arc lights shooting for various product endorsements, Chopra would perhaps just like to sit back and rest on her well-deserved laurels. However, that is not the case, as she has a music career to think about. Her song, “Exotic” has been topping the international music charts for many weeks, and she is preparing to lend her melodious voice to Bollywood film sound tracks as well. It can be safely stated that Priyanka Chopra stands out from her contemporaries due to her ability to embrace a multitude of roles without fear. She is among a miniscule minority of artists for whom versatility comes naturally. From the young girl who made her debut in the Tamil film “Thamizhan” where she was famously criticized for showing “no acting skills”, to being one of the top paid actresses in the film industry, Priyanka Chopra epitomizes versatility and talent, and also stands out for being a self-made superstar who is not afraid of a challenging role.
