Pastel sarees are soothing to the eye
The ongoing summer season and the ensuing heat is reason enough for colors to pale, literally! Pastel sarees are easy on the eye and offer delicate washes of color, which add a sense of youthful innocence and grace to your ethnic look, while accentuating your skin tone. From light lilacs and mauves, to candy color tones such as pistachio, baby pink, lemon yellow, and light “powder” blue, everything about a pastel saree is about being delicate, elegant, and understated. Worn by actresses such as Kangana Ranaut and Kareena Kapoor, pastel sarees accentuate the figure while highlighting the complexion and adding a glow to it. This is especially true of the coral, pink, and peach toned pastel sarees, which make fair skin such as Kareena Kapoor’s glow. For the duskier women, actress Priyanka Chopra’s lightly bronzed skin stands out in lemon yellow and orange tones. For those in the tanned or brown skin category, almost any pastel hue will suit your skin, but blue, green, and rust tones will stand out exceptionally well. Almost every Indian designer has a pastel saree as part of his or her collection, which is unsurprising given the versatility of the color palette. Unlike some other palettes which are known to suit only specific skin tones and body types, pastel colors are eternally soothing and pleasing to the eye, and create a refined silhouette which is flattering to all figures, with special emphasis on those who are on the curvy side of the scale. If you wish to look colorful without looking garish, pleasing without overdoing the embellishments, and want to exude elegance without the drama of over accessorizing and “bling”, a plain or ombre toned pastel saree is your garment of choice. Recommended embellishments for pastel party sarees include lace and thin satin ribbon borders. It is not recommended to be very heavy on decoration as the highlight of the saree lies in its color. If embellishments are compulsory, it is advised that you restrict them to the pallu of the saree and opt for silver or gold as your “bling” of choice so as to maintain the elegance of the saree. This saree is for those who want to make subtle and sophisticated style statements, and might not bode well for those who prefer sarees with heavy zardozi and decoration details. There are however, pastel wedding sarees, which are available with heavy lace, bead, and mirror work, although the fabrics used are less delicate and restrict the natural flow of the saree since it is weighed down by decorative elements. Pastel sarees therefore are suitable for the woman of style who looks forward to being a subtle showstopper, and appreciates the sheerness and delicacy of light fabric, minimal embellishments, and classic accessories such as a simple pearl necklace, pearl drop earrings, or a cuff bracelet. The look is easy to accessorize and while gold can always be used as part of blouse, pallu and border embellishments, it is silver, which will provide that pretty sparkle.
