Shorter salwar suits are fashionable and trendy
The versatile salwar suit has been going through a metamorphosis in order to suit the fashion statements of the younger generation. In a manner much like the saree, the length of a traditional salwar suit has been shortened in order to make it easier to wear to parties and other celebratory occasions. This is not to say that the traditional look of the salwar suit has been abandoned, it is only the fact that it ends at or above the knee that makes it different from a regular style of salwar suit. Some of these shorter length salwar suits have been given their own names, one of the most common is a “kurti” or “short kurti”, which is quite popular among college going students and fashion forward women of all ages.
All the well known fashion designers have come up with their own renditions of a shorter salwar suit, most of which are preferred and worn by Bollywood stars and other celebrities. Here too, one will notice that ladies of all ages are enjoying the trend, from a young star like Sonam Kapoor to senior stars such as Hema Malini and Madhuri Dixit, shorter salwar suits are in vogue for a variety of reasons. The first reason involves the newness of this style and the ability for one to show off a number of leggings and churidars in different colors rather than only the kameez. With a shorter salwar suit one can opt for embellished or multi colored salwars which look beautiful and accentuate the look of the garment. For casual occasions and daily wear, a shorter salwar suit allows for more free body movement, especially during a busy day where one is likely to be commuting a lot. In the hot summer season where one does not wish to wear heavy garments, a shorter salwar suit is the answer to the problem. It is light on the body and can be as casual or embellished as the wearer would like it to be. Shorter salwar suits by designers such as Anita Dongre and design houses such as Global Desi are a rage with the young crowd as they offer a selection of interesting and colorful short salwar suits that can be converted from casual daily wear to fancy wear with the help of accompanying accessories such as chunnis and reversible leggings in different colors.
As with most garments, shorter salwar suits come in different lengths in order to accentuate different body types and fashion statements. For the shorter ladies, it is advisable to wear asymmetrical short salwar suits with v-necks or boat necks in order to minimize bulk and add the illusion of height. For taller ladies one can opt for short salwar suits which end above the knee; however if one is trying to minimize height it is best to stick to knee length in order to balance out the long body frame of the wearer. Shorter salwar suits are widely available at all major stores and non-designer, budget-friendly versions of popular styles are also available at all local shops which stock ethnic wear. It is a good idea to keep a couple of short salwar suits in neutral colors handy in one’s wardrobe for humid weather and daily wear.
