East meets West in new-age sarees!

East meets West in new-age sarees!

Who said saree is a thing of passé? It is rather being revamped to suit the tastes of the modern-age women, who want to sport this so-called traditional wear in a never-seen-before avatar! Of course it goes without saying that not many women would ever ditch the saree, rather, they are smart and wise enough to use the saree to their fullest advantage, when it comes to showing off their most glamorous side. The saree has in fact transcended the boundaries of not only time but also place, with even women from different countries wanting to give it a try!
If we take into account certain high-profile celebrities who have chosen to wear this Indian attire on their visit to India, we find the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Lady Gaga who both wore sarees designed by ace designer Tarun Tahiliani. On the other hand, Indian women are choosing to showcase this quintessentially Indian attire in international platforms, hence these days we find Bollywood divas such as Vidya Balan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor etc. in saree for events such as the Cannes Film Festival and so on. While some prefer to stick to the conventional mode, others give it a fun twist by adapting itself to the contemporary era. Whether one does it by pre-stitching the otherwise unstitched saree so that it can be just zipped up or by converting the traditional blouses into something different such as a crop top, is entirely a personal calling!
Saree is much more versatile than the world gives it credit for. It can be easily modified in ways that blend the Indian aesthetics with western influences. The accessories, footwear etc.can also be accordingly more of fusion wear than typically Indian, which narrows down the scope of experimentation. The saree in fact still continues to evolve, with designers such as Madhu Jain and Sanjay Garg reclaiming the traditional weave, while on the other hand, designer Masaba Gupta plays with fresh prints that have given a whole new bold and unique touch to the saree; she in fact is one of those designers who have brought about the wonderful confluence of the East and the West in her sarees, thus making it a very ‘in’ thing. Further, with Bolly beauties such as Sonam Kapoor who is always applauded for endorsing saree in her public appearances in her unique style, such as the fusion of a saree and a gown or even a dress, or draping it in different ways, with innovative blouses, the versatility of sarees is being advocated worldwide.
Likewise, many young designers are tweaking the saree to fit the demands of the current fashion trends, and thus the saree now treads the grounds between a couture gown and what is essentially an emblem of “traditional Indian culture.” This is also been displayed to no end in almost all the recent fashion shows when the saree was displayed more as a fusion wear, and is thus, now as much suited for a cocktail party as it is for a big fat Indian wedding ceremony.
