Body chains – the new fashion jewellery in town
We are always looking for new ways to innovate where jewellery and fashion is concerned, aren’t we? A trend which seems to be hot on the radar of the funky and fashion conscious are body chains – again, a revived concept of jewellery.
Body chains have recently taken the celeb fashion world by storm with fashion icons like Rihanna and Beyonce flaunting some interesting pieces. Body chains are not a new concept however – a gold body chain, presumed to have been buried for safety in the 5th century AD was found in 1992 at Hoxne, Suffolk – an extremely rich find from Roman Britain. Body chains have also been represented in Hellenic and Roman Art and Indian history too, has evidence of body chains being worn by women. The chains went over the shoulder and under the arms of the wearer and the places at which they joined in the front and in the back were decorated with precious gems and exquisite detailing of the metal. The chains themselves could be studded with precious stones.
Chain necklaces have always been around, it’s just that now, they have been taken to a whole new level now. Now, a combination of chains is used to drape over the entire torso, part of the shoulder and even down the back. You can wear the entire ensemble over a pair jeans paired with a monochrome tee shirt and it is guaranteed to look fetching and interesting.
There are typically five ways to wear a body chain, though of course you can come up with your own innovations and styles.
The neck to waist style: wear a combination of many chains or just three or four in this style. This is the style you would see on Rihanna etc and if you love the look, copy it to make it your own. A long chain which goes around the body and the waist to link up behind in a beautiful design, this can be worn with the intention to turn heads at any formal party.
The shoulder chain: if you are not a fan of wearing a chain over your entire body then why not opt for a quirky yet stylish look by wearing a one shoulder dress and a shoulder-neck chain on the bare shoulder? This will make you stand out from the rest of the crowd who will probably be wearing staid necklaces.
Encircle only your neck and arms: take to the next step by wearing a simple off shoulder dress or a tube top and a necklace which drapes around your neck and extends over both your arms. The look is unique and adds symmetry to your outfit.
Belly chains: these are no stranger to Indians at least, with it being a favourite accessory to many a sari clad diva. However, instead of wearing a single, slim chain around your waist , wear three or four in various lengths or one which the chain is thick and scalloped. Wear a short tank top and jeans and let the chain sit around your waist, if you want a casual look, else of course, paired with a sari or a traditional embroidered skirt and blouse ensemble, it will look beautiful.
