Jewellery to wear to work
Some women love wearing large studs, jingly bracelets, nose pins – flashing rings and what have you all the time – even to their workplace. Others are of the sort who do not bother to put on a pair of earrings when they leave for work. Both types of women must be brought to task – it’s 2013, work culture and clothes are vastly different, and if you want to be taken seriously in your workplace and in your personal life, bothering about the way you look, what you wear and how you accessorise are very important.
If you are the kind of woman who relies on shock value when it comes to clothes and accessories, it might be time to tone down your bling quotient when it comes to office wear. First, look around your workplace and note the kind of atmosphere you work in. If you work in a media office, chances are that you will be able to get away with anything where clothing and accessories are concerned because media offices are the most informal of all places. People can wear a funky leopard print top with slacks, layer on some dark eyeshadow and don feather earrings and skull finger rings and no one will bat an eyelid.
So save your bright pieces for such a workplace – wear those funky long necklaces, large statement rings and brightly coloured earrings for your office if you are lucky enough to have a relaxed dress code. However, do be aware that for most offices, anything other than wearing simple studs on the ears and a slim chain bracelet will be considered over-dressed and an overkill in the jewellery department. So jewellery to wear to the workplace should be well chosen, subtle and well coordinated. Go for large studs or small hoops in gold or silver, if you are working in a senior position, coloured plastic hoops that hang down to your shoulders might not look too great on you. Also avoid wearing jewellery which is distracting...like a large necklace with plastic red chillies hanging from it, or jingling chandelier earrings, or an armful of large wooden bangles.
When you are in a meeting, the eyes of those present will go to these items of jewellery and the mind will stray from the task at hand. There is an entire range of jewellery brought out by the Indian Jewellery brand Tanishq intended for the workplace for this reason.
While you don’t need to buy anything specifically to wear to work, stick with the small and subtle pieces in your jewellery box when choosing something for office. And for heaven’s sake, don’t make the common fashion faux pas of wearing a chunky necklace with chunky earrings. They make for quite an arresting combination, and it is definitely not suitable for the office.
If all else fails then opt for the classic diamond studs in your ears and a small diamond ring on your hands. They will add to your shirt and trousers ensemble in a delightfully feminine manner that will soften the formality of work wear, yet keep it looking professional.
