Jewellery for your feet
There is no part of our body that we leave out when accessorizing. A woman adorns her ears, nose, sometimes lips, neck, wrists, belly – all the way down to the ankles and the toes. The feet are often under the spotlight - even though they are the farthest point of our body. Our poor feet are always burdened with a lot of weight – reportedly feet carry triple the amount of our body weight because of movement. So when we wear jewellery around our ankles or on our feet, we are giving them the reverence and attention they deserve.
Traditional jewellery for the feet are anklets and toe rings. An interesting thing about the history of anklets is that they were actually shackles that tribes put on the feet of their women so that they could not escape and were marked as their own.
Over time they became adornments for the feet and they can look extremely elegant.
Anklets can make you look very chic and elegant, depending on what styles you choose and what outfits you pair it with. If you are the kind of girl who wears a lot of ethnic 'kurtas' then you can opt for pretty and delicate anklets in metal and beads. There are plenty of designs to choose from, ranging from simple chain linked anklets to ones with flower designs which look like a ‘rangoli’ around your ankle. These filigreed designs have intricate hand crafted metal work, sometimes augmented with tiny beads to increase the delicate nature of this jewellery. Anklets also have bells that tinkle as you walk – bridal anklets are heavy with bells and make more noise!
If you wear more of western outfits then you can wear funky beaded anklets, ribbons embellished with stones or plastic shapes, strings threaded through beads or even a plain string around the ankle. Do your own thing by cutting strips of cloth and embellishing it as per your fancy. A pretty anklet can be made by cutting a thin strip of lace and winding it around your foot, tie a small bow and trim the edges off. Run a ribbon of contrasting colour through it and attach tiny bells to the ends. Toe rings and tattoos are another way of dressing up your feet.
Women are pros at discovering new ways to reinvent jewellery and adornments. Lots can be done with anklets and toe rings too, one just has to be creative and interested in making a fashion statement!
