Wear a brooch to rock your outfit

Wear a brooch to rock your outfit

If you are old fashioned, you would call these pieces of jewellery brooches, if not, you would call them pins. But whatever may be your choice of words, there is not a doubt in the fashion world that these little bits of prettiness adds a lot of pizzazz to your outfit. This accessory is a trend this season and a lot of very influential people tend to wear it, right from Michelle Obama to Hilary Clinton and almost all Hollywood A-listers, and closer to home, the men of the Bolly brigade flaunt them on the catwalk! And why not? The brooch was a staple accessory for Indian royalty – the Maharajas of yore are often depicted wearing beautiful brooches embellished with pearls and precious gems.

Women don’t miss a beat when it comes to jewellery and fashion so they will obviously not give up a chance to add one more accoutrement to their style statement – given that there are so many ways that one can wear a brooch, not just pinned to the lapel or chest, it is sure to be a favourite amongst women. It adds a sparkle to a different area of clothing and hence makes the outfit look different.

How does one wear a brooch? Well there are many, many ways. You can obviously go down the tried and tested route and wear it as a lapel pin – if you are wearing a coat or a shirt with a collar, pin your brooch to the end of the left collar. This is a great look for formals and you can wear this piece of jewellery to office. Just make sure that you keep the brooch small and elegant else it might not look professional. Usual choices would be small brooches in the shape of a flower, or a charm of your choice. Avoid wearing loud and flashy brooches to work.

Another way you can pep up your outfit with a brooch is to wear it at your bust line if you are wearing a dress. In case you are wearing a maxi dress that is flowing to your ankles, attach a pretty brooch to the empire line at your waist or pin it right in the middle of your neckline, depending on the cut of the dress. Shorter dresses look lovely as well with a brooch pinned to the waist or just above it – where the bustier and skirt meet.

If you don’t wear dresses or outfits that would befit a brooch – say you are more a tee-shirt and jeans girl, then you can use a brooch as a funky pin on the handle of your bag, or even to pin your scarf with. Wear a white tank top, loop a scarf around your neck and secure it at the side or in front with a pretty brooch. When you are not using the scarf, tie it around the handles of your bag and attach it to the knot. Else you can wrap a pretty length of cloth around your head as a headband or a bandanna and pin it to one side.

If you have a clutch bag that needs jazzing up, pin your brooch to it. Even if you prefer wearing tank tops, wear a funky brooch like one shaped like an octopus on it to attract oohs and aahs! If you are wearing a casual shirt with a collar, buy a collar brooch – one that clips on to both ends of the collar and hangs in between like a pretty necklace. Or tie a length of ribbon around your neck and pin a brooch to one side. The options are endless! Brooches also come in many designs so choose the ones which suit you best and remember, they are a great way to bring a tired old outfit to life!
