“Every Mother Counts” contributes towards reducing mother mortality rates worldwide
While maternity by itself is a beautiful, life-changing experience, the fact remains that pregnancy related complications arise for many mothers to-be, and often cause health concerns and even death for mothers during the birth giving process. It is estimated that pregnancy is high on the list of issues, which results in the death of women between the ages of 15-19 in developing nations. To further aggravate the issue, medical personnel in these nations do not possess the knowledge and training, which would have aided them in saving the life of an expectant mother.
When supermodel Christy Turlington faced the trauma of a complicated labor, she realized the need for more education and services for expectant mothers worldwide, and founded the non-profit organization, Every Mother Counts in 2010. The organization trains midwifes and obstetricians on the many complications, which could occur during the process of pregnancy, and ensures that expectant mothers are given correct treatment for their problems. The organization also channels the support of celebrity parents such as musicians Bono, Chris Martin, Sting, Faith Hill and Lauren Hill, who have contributed towards a music album, which aims to use empowering music as a vehicle by which to get the message across to a diverse audience.
The primary inspiration behind Every Mother Counts lies behind Turlington’s own experience with Post-partum Hemorrhage (PPH) and her subsequent film, “No Woman No Cry”, which focused on female mortality rates during pregnancy, and was shot in Bangladesh, Tanzania, Guatemala and the US with expectant mothers and their caregivers. Interestingly Turlington was pregnant with her second child during the shooting of the film and has stated that the experience of being pregnant and interacting with pregnant women from diverse socio-economic circumstances educated and touched her greatly.
Statistics show how a woman dies from birth related complications every 90 seconds, and on ground visits to various maternal health centers has shown how most centers in developed nations employ poorly-trained staff who know little about the many complications which could affect a mother during or immediately after the process of birth. Every Mother Counts has taken on the difficult but fulfilling task of educating those in hard to reach areas where medical care is basic, if at all.
One of the biggest achievements of Every Mother Counts lies in its “actions” which are clearly highlighted via its website. Each year the organization completes over 400,000 actions ranging from traveling to and training in remote areas, to holding fundraising events for future outreach work, to other activities such as holding mini film festivals where “No Woman No Cry” is screened for potential donors and the general public for the purpose of awareness generation.
Every Mother Counts is a boon to those in the maternal healthcare industry, and has its sights set on reaching out towards those in areas without pre and post-natal care facilities. Thanks to the efforts of Christy Turlington and her supporters, the organization hopes to extend its outreach to include India and other developing nations, thereby making the process of birth and motherhood a less risky process for new mothers.
