Comfort or Style : What must a footwear offer?
Marilyn Monroe had been quoted, saying: “Give a girl the right pair of shoes and she can conquer the world.” Indeed, shoes are as important an ingredient of fashion and personality as clothes are. And in order to make us women ”sure-footed” in every “walk” of life, it is extremely essential to wear the right shoes, right as in, satisfying the dual criteria of comfort and style.
The root cause of dilemma when it comes to footwear for many a modern woman is that hardly do shoes fulfil both the requirements. That is, if the footwear is stylish, then it isn’t comfortable enough and vice-versa. High heels, stilettoes, and such other trendy shoes give an extra edge to your look by adding oodles of oomph, but at the end of the day, women complain of not only nasty shoe-bites but severe muscle pain and other complications. It is entirely a woman’s call to choose between her priorities.
Girls in their teens and early twenties - who are mostly students, are divided in their opinion. While some vouch for fashionable shoes, the other group chooses comfort over looks. There are others that try to strike a balance between both. They prefer going to work or casual purposes in flats, aerosols and other shoes that offer the maximum comfort level, whereas parties and occasions would mean that they pick up the gorgeous high heels. Doctors advise that when it comes to footwear, comfort should not be compromised with, at any cost. It is our footwear that bears our body weight to a major extent, and while we stand, walk, run etc. the pressure is entirely borne by our shoes. If the shoes are not proper, it can have severe adverse effects on our back-bone, thigh muscles, calves, joints etc. and lead to disastrous outcomes.
For those who swear by style statements, their argument in favour of heels and other fashionable footwear would be that they enhance one’s glamour, makes one look taller, more confident, brings a good body posture, and are complementary to fashionable clothes. If a woman feels at ease with it and can carry it off gracefully, then nothing beats heels and stilettoes for party-wear. At the end of the day, it is an individual’s call to make a choice. However, both the considerations have to be kept in mind. Shoe-brands and retailers are coming up with newer ideas and designs that attempt to blend both comfort and style for the all-rounder woman of today. She cannot afford to look ‘ordinary’ and at the same time, can’t let go of the ‘comfort’ factor. It’s good news for them if more and more varieties of footwear come in the market with a promise to ensure style and comfort!
