The women who love themselves for who they are!
Media has turned into a gigantic force today, which dictates social convention, fashion, and even ideologies. Media manipulation is inevitable, and there is a strange force which mass communication contains, which immediately makes the populace want to follow whatever these different mediums want them to. In such times, body image is something which has plagued the modern woman, due to the sheer fact that media has overwhelmingly endorsed a particular kind of body as being ideal, and consequently, everything else has become less than favourable. When your hoardings, magazines, tabloids and fashion websites scream out for you to have the size zero figure, anything bigger starts to look unacceptable.
Celebrities too, have overwhelming pressure upon their shoulders, to look a certain way. Because the masses want to look up at them as role models, they are expected to look like everyone else does. The media does not take kindly to rebels. There have been many talented women whom the media has bombarded on account of looking different than the terms dictated by mass communication. Kate Winslet is one such woman who has always exercised a mind of her own. She has never been thin, and she has, much to the ire of the media, been comfortable about it. Winslet is one woman who has always maintained the fact that she likes how she looks, and that she prefers to be curvy rather than looking like a waif. Christina Hendricks too, is a woman who has been picked on, by the media, for looking “fat.” However, Hendricks has flaunted her curvaceous body quite proudly, and neither of these women have made any efforts to fall in line with the other celebrities and actors who have starved themselves, and worked themselves to the bone in order to achieve the size zero figure.
While Winslet and Hendricks have been ambassadors of looking healthy and being proud of the curvier body-type in Hollywood, Bollywood has its own ambassadors in the forms of Vidya Balan and Sonakshi Sinha. Both of these women had entered Bollywood as women who were slightly healthy. Despite the tabloids which kept rooting for them to lose their “puppy fat,” both these women obstinately refused to do so. Balan has defiantly told the reporters that she loves her body just the way it is, and she has shown success by oozing sex appeal while not conforming to a certain type which the media endorses as being desirable.
Today, being anything but skinny in considered to be a compromise rather than a choice. It is never seen as the first option, and most people believe that the curvy women get used to their bodies, rather than having loved their bodies all the time. Kate Winslet, Christina Hendricks, Vidya Balan and Sonkashi Sinha are examples which state otherwise.
These women refuse to follow common dictates. They refuse to compromise on their art, and their self-esteem by blindly running after what the media propagates. These are women who manage to look gorgeous and alluring despite being much “heavier” than the other actors who have starved themselves to the bone. These are women who are proud of their bodies and who love themselves for who they are, and not for who the media says they should be.
