Is there professional rivalry between Kareena Kapoor and sister Karishma? –
The answer is probably no, at least, not that we know of. We have all heard of sibling rivalry. Wait, let’s just say we've all been there, done that. At some point or the other in our life, we've all held that grudge, that feeling of angst combined with envy and competitiveness towards our siblings. They have been our best friends on more occasions, true, yet we've either been at the offender’s or defender’s position at some stage to this inevitable notion of human psychology – sibling rivalry.
As long as it is confined to a very young stage in one’s life, it demands a certain sort of coping. One, of which perhaps we are not even much aware of, for our conscious minds are too ignorant about such complex emotions; though deep within, we cannot deny that it has happened with all of us. As we grow up, some of it becomes a bittersweet memory, which amuses, intrigues and baffles us at the same time. Some more of it though, stays on, in some muffled corner of our psyche, which is mostly suppressed and only finds a vent-out on occasions. However, what can really get tricky is when this suppressed sense of rivalry raises its ugly head in our professional sphere. Juvenile minds may have coped with such sentiments in their own innate, spontaneous way; there lay the innocence of it. An adult’s mind is not as simple and straight-forward; it functions in strange, inexplicably convoluted ways through the labyrinth of worldly ideas and institutions.
When we cross the threshold of teenage and are at the doorway to our respective professional realms, we inwardly devise several defense mechanisms, survival strategies and self-induced responses to the diverse challenges that one is exposed to. It goes without saying that showbiz is such as world where this is even more pronounced and predominant. Every other day we hear of cat-fights between the female leads of a movie, one actor bashing up another, verbally, or even physically in certain cases. Such are the demands, pressures and perplexing workings of the industry. Everyone is replacing someone or the other. Actors and actresses are eyeing the number game, and resorting to cut-throat competition, healthy or unhealthy, to maintain their position. To bag the best roles, to win the maximum number of awards, to please the critics, to win the audiences’ hearts, to set the box-office collections ringing, and what not! They are always vying for the no.1 position.
When Kareena Kapoor entered Bollywood, comparisons with her elder sis Karishma were unavoidable, as the latter had earned the title of being a talented actress as well as a star, since years! It remains an arguable fact whether Kareena left her sister far behind in the industry, but most would agree that the two sisters’s paths clearly did not cross when it comes to career.
Karishma had almost made an exit from the world of films to settle down, when Kareena entered into the picture. Who knows, if both would have been working simultaneously, then they might have had to battle the ego-clashes and simmering rivalry issues between them. Instead, we are made to believe that they share a very close rapport, always supporting each other, their gestures and body language vouching for the same in public events, award shows etc.
Though Karishma is making renewed attempts to make a comeback in the industry, Kareena is currently one of the top-notch actresses, and this minimizes the chances of sibling rivalry creeping in between them. On the other hand, the media is presently rife with the news that Priyanka Chopra and cousin sister Parineeti Chopra might turn out to be rivals in their professional arena.
While Priyanka is one of the most-loved actresses of today, who has established herself on the basis of her sheer talent and hard work, Parineeti has made a powerful entry into Bollywood! Though just two films old, she has already made the movie-makers, critics and audience sit up and take notice of her. Only time can tell whether the Chopra sisters will be able to co-exist in the industry as amiably as they have been so far, (apparently), or whether the intricacies of the industry will also sow the seeds of rivalry between them.
