Shannon Smyth - Founder of A Girl's Gotta Spa
Shannon Smyth launched her blog 'A Girl's Gotta Spa' in 2005, with the primary objective to give "straightforward" reviews to women. Years down the line, not only is her blog a very popular beauty blogs in the US, but she has also made a mark as a social media expert. Let's hear about her journey:
1. How would you describe Shannon Smyth in 3 words?
Loyal, funny, honest.
2. Growing up as a child, what did you always want to become? Who have been your role model in life?
I wanted to be an astronaut when I was really young until the Space Shuttle Challenger blew up. Then I wanted to be a history teacher for a very long time until I finally landed on Psychology in my junior year in high school. I went on to get my Bachelors Degree and practice in the mental health field with children and their families. Once I had a family of my own, the stress of the job (and red tape of insurance companies) led me to stay home with my children and switch gears to the beauty industry.
My role models in my life aren't celebrities, but family members like my mom, my grandma and my cousin Kelie.
3. When and how did you start 'A Girl's Gotta Spa!'?
I began A Girl's Gotta Spa! beauty blog in 2005 as a way to cut through marketing hype and provide women with honest and straightforward reviews. With thousands of reviews under my belt (and literally on my skin), I launched a bath and body company in February of this year also called A Girl's Gotta Spa! I wanted to give women an effective pampering product that they would love.
4. What according to you has contributed to the popularity of your blog?
When I began the blog almost 9 years ago, there weren't very many beauty bloggers so I was able to garner some press early on. Soon I began mentoring other up and coming beauty bloggers and eventually, under the mentorship of a public relations guru, began to pitch myself for stories so that more people would know about me. Aside from that, we provide helpful and informative content for our readers that keeps them coming back.
5. Do you have plans of adding more products to your online store in the future?
Yes! I plan to expand the Energizing Citrus line beyond just a body wash and body lotion. We're currently planning to launch a salt scrub in the same fragrance, as well as a shea butter, lip balm and bath bomb. Our next fragrance will be lavender and we'll also expand out a full range of products in that scent, as well.
6. What are the future milestones for your venture?
Currently I am pitching distribution in spas and online retailers in the USA to carry my line of products. It's my goal to grow the brand into a larger product line and also serve as professional treatments in spas.
7. What do you consider is the most rewarding aspect of beauty blogging?
The other beauty bloggers I've gotten to know over the years who have become close friends. Hands down, that has been the best thing about it.
8. You're also a social media expert, and have worked with prestigious brands as a social media consultant. How do you feel has that widened your vision as a beauty blogger?
Yes, I've worked with brands who were just starting out to more established companies. It always just depends on what types of services and the goals they are looking to accomplish. I can't say that it has widened my vision too much, it just made me much more aware of brand budgets, the owner's hopes and fears for how the beauty world will treat them.
9. Some tips for newbie beauty bloggers?
Love what you do, let your personality shine through in your posts and press on even when it seems like no one is listening - eventually the hard work will pay off!
10. Are you glad to be a woman? Why?
Of course! I love the strength and determination of women, our ambition and how we can love so intensely.
