Teach them self defence

Teach them self defence

The recent spate of closely-followed incidents of crimes against women – rapes, molestation and other forms of sexual harassment has alarmed one and all. How ironical that while we claim to have reached the pinnacle of civilization and advancement, we are also simultaneously witnessing the surfacing of the most bestial and inhumanely facet of human beings. Given such pitiable scenario, coupled with the failure of the authorised organisations to take concrete measures for the same, it is high time that we encourage our girls to fight for themselves, and yes, here, by “fight”, one actually means a physical one, for if they are not resilient enough, they shall have to pay a heavy price to the perverted creatures that infest the society.

In the aftermath of the gang rape in Delhi last month, girls as well their well-wishers have actually been favouring martial arts and other such self-defence tactics to ensure their protection. The masses have also been clamouring to make self-defence classes compulsory in educational institutions, for it has become necessary to empower the girls physically as well, from a young age. Parents are getting their daughters enrolled for these courses, in case their schools do not take a step, and many corporate houses have also been seeking customised sessions for their women staff. Irrespective of whether one is a housewife or a working woman, many are now keen to train themselves in martial arts as cases of sexual assault top the crime charts of many cities across India. It is also said to enhance one’s confidence, as one feels reassured that she no longer has to put up with or be intimidated even milder forms of harassment, and can teach the offenders a hard lesson.

Earlier, martial arts was considered to be almost an exclusive territory of men, with very few women treading on it, since the general notion was that such activities would rob a woman of her feminine nature. However, with the drastic changes in scenario, more and more women are gauging the importance of this and parents and teachers have also come to realize that girls have to made self-sufficient and have become much more encouraging towards this. Keeping this in mind many organizations, clubs etc. have been conducting free trial classes for girls and women in martial arts, and more of such courses are being propagated everywhere.
Martial arts experts and instructors all over the country have reported an enormous rise in the number of girl students who have started attending their classes after surge in crimes against women.

Young girls as well as grown-up ones are being prompted to equip themselves with at least the basics of self-defence techniques so that they can fend off attackers. This trend should also be propagated and popularized in the rural areas, for the present state of affairs are such that the harassers should be paid back with their own coin.
